Lady Spartans play tough defense: left to right, Natalee Hanson, Ashley Hansen, Alexis Swasey, Camille Fehlberg and Shala Pitchforth. |
Rivalry ballgames are always fun to participate in, and even better to watch and cheer during, and last week’s Emery-Carbon match-ups were no exception. On Tuesday, the Lady Dinos came to Castle Dale and won 49-45 before the Emery boys traveled to Price the next night and won 59-45.
On Tuesday, the Spartans failed to finish a game that they had led all night long and lost a heartbreaker. Emery led 12-9 after the first quarter, 27-21 at the half and 35-30 after three periods.
Emery got off to bad starts in the second and fourth quarters as Carbon went on a 9-0 run to start the second period and an 8-1 run to start the last period. Emery recovered the first time but not the last as the game slipped away.
In the fourth quarter, Carbon tied the score at 36-36 and then took their first lead of the night at 38-36 with 3:44 to go in the game. Alexis Swasey scored and hit a free throw to put Emery back in the lead at 39-38.
Jaime King scored for Carbon; Camille Fehlberg responded with two free throws for Emery as the game went back and forth. Another King basket, two more Camille free throws, another point for King as she hit 1 of 2 free throws and a basket by Shala Pitchforth put Emery up by two at 45-43 with 1:38 left. Unfortunately for the Spartans, that was their last points as King hit another basket and Morgan Warburton put in two free throws to close out the scoring.
Scoring for the Spartans: Fehlberg with 16 points, Natalee Hanson, Shayla and Ashley Hansen with 7 points each, Alexis with 5 points and Callie Seely with 2 points.
The Emery JV’s won 56-51 as Meagan Pearson had 20 points and Jodi Lundell added17 points. The Emery sophomores won 47-25 as Meagan again was the leading scorer with 21 points and Jodi added 11 points.
The Lady Spartans closed out the week with a win at Delta 38-35 to go to 1-1 in Region 8 play. After being outscored in the first period 11-7, the Spartans came back and won each of the next three to win by 3 points.
Natalee was the leading scorer with 17 points with Camille scoring 10 points. Ashley scored 6 points, Alexis scored 4 points and Shala had a single point.
Darrin Winn, Brad Sitterud and Joey Bernard make things tough for the Delta player. |
