Two stolen vehicles in county

In two separate incidents, stolen vehicles passed through the county last week. A gas skip was reported from Grants in Ferron and a sergeant from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office attempted to locate the vehicle while a deputy took the report at the store.
The cashier reported two subjects in a newer black car had skipped out on $27.72 worth of gas. The sergeant attempted to locate the vehicle but couldn’t find it. A description of the vehicle was given to the Richfield dispatch and they located the vehicle. The vehicle was stolen and the Richfield police said the suspects had stolen gas along the way. The suspect also had a video camera running in the stolen vehicle which had the town of Emery on it.
In another incident, an attempt to locate was put out by the Emery County dispatch on a stolen 1997 Ford pickup out of Sanpete County. The vehicle also contained stolen firearms. A sergeant said he had seen a vehicle matching that description traveling across the Moore flats about 30 minutes earlier. A deputy spotted the vehicle at Maverik getting ready to leave. The deputy contacted dispatch and confirmed that the plates were that of the stolen vehicle. The deputy activated his lights as the stolen vehicle proceeded west on Main Street in Castle Dale. The truck then turned and went north on 200 East. The deputy activated his sirens and the vehicle turned west on 100 North. The vehicle finally pulled over at about 100 East and 100 North. The driver exited his vehicle and approached the police vehicle.
The deputy instructed the suspect to stop and keep his hands where the deputy could see them. The driver asked why he had been pulled over and the deputy said it was because the vehicle he was driving was reported as stolen. The deputy placed handcuffs on the subject. The subject said he had taken the vehicle to stay warm because is was cold the night before. A search was conducted and the deputy found three yellow 20 gauge shotgun shells and two lighters in one pocket and the suspects identification.
Backup help arrived on the scene and arranged to have the suspect vehicle taken to the sheriff’s office to be searched. A check was run on the subject and he was found to have a warrant for DUI.
The detective was notified and came to the sheriff’s office to process the vehicle. The detective found some interesting discoveries, a sawed off shotgun was laying under a coat next to the drivers seat. The shotgun was a single shot with a round in the chamber. A small black derringer was also loaded and lying on the floor in the middle of the driver compartment. There were two rifles lying in the passenger seat and one of them had a bullet in the chamber.
The suspect was booked on the warrant and held for Sanpete County on the stolen vehicle and stolen firearms charges. The owner of the vehicle was contacted to see which of the firearms belonged to him. He described three of the guns. The shotgun was not his.
The suspect was listed as a Michael Lee Sorensen from Tooele, date of birth, 4-7-1955.
