The Green River High School boys and girls basketball teams each got a victory last Friday night as they each defeated Meridian High School at home. The boys won 35-24 and the girls prevailed 59-25.
The Lady Pirates got their third victory of the season with the win and now have a 3-1 record. They had opened the season with a narrow loss to Escalante 38-34 in a game played at Richfield and then defeated Bryce Valley 46-30 and Altamont 49-37 before the game with Meridian.
The boys on the other hand had only played 2-A’s Grand High School and they lost that game 63-39.
In the Meridian game, Green River ran all over their opponent in the first quarter as they took a 19-2 lead at the end of the period. They continued their scoring and lead 35-11 at the half.
Leading the Lady Pirates was Heidi Vetere with 17 points. Heidi is averaging 14.5 points per game through four games. Also scoring was Whitney Bigelow with 13 points, Adrianna Cordova with 10 points, McKenzie Spadafora and Ciji Vetere with 6 points each, Charle Vetere with 3 points and Leah Spadafora and Savannah Bayles with 2 points each.

Leading the Pirates was Kaden Robertson with 13 points and Brent Johnson with 10 points. Jace Vetere scored 6 points, Kaleb Fail scored 4 points and Weston Vetere added 2 points in the win.
In the boy’s earlier game with Grand, Robertson was the leading scorer there with 20 points including two three-point shots. Johnson added 10 points in the game.
Earlier in the week, the Lady Pirates also defeated Altamont. Leading the way was Adriana Cordova with 22 points. Adrianna is averaging 14.25 points per game. Also scoring were Heidi with 14 points, Charle with 8 points, Leah and Whitney with 2 points each and Ciji with a single point.
In the earlier games this season, Adriana was the leading scorer against Escalante with 12 points followed by Heidi with 9 points. Heidi was the leading scorer against Bryce Valley with 18 points followed by Adriana with 13 points.
The Lady Pirates now play Piute at Green River on Wednesday and Tabiona on Friday, also at home.
The Pirates travel to Richfield to play in a tournament this weekend. They play Milford Friday morning at 10 am and play Bryce Valley Saturday night at 7 pm.
