Last week the Lady Spartans traveled to St. George to play a couple of basketball games and come home with a couple of wins as they would continue being the best team in 3-A girls basketball. Dixie and Pine View forgot to read the script though and Emery came home with two losses instead. Emery suffered a 34-32 loss to Dixie on Thursday night and followed that up with a 43-31 loss the next night at Pine View.
In the two games, Emery did not play particularly well but they were assisted in their losses by the refereeing or lack thereof. On Thursday night, Emery shot only eight free throws in the entire game despite the fact that the Lady Flyers apparently thought they were in a roller derby match. The referees assisted the Flyers in their style of play and Dixie came from behind to secure the 2-point victory.
At Pine View, Emery again did not play particularly well as the Panther coach thought that his team took Emery out of their game plan. Actually it was refereeing again and Emery’s lack of putting the ball in the hoop.
At the end of the first period, Coach Steve Gordon was heard telling his team “How many lay-ups have we missed, six or seven? We have got to make our lay-ups.” They failed to respond to this request. You do not win many games if you do not score and this night the Emery Spartans did not score. They missed lay-ups all night and they did not hit an outside shot until Camille Fehlberg connected on a 3-pointer with less than three minutes to go. They were only 10 for 22 at the free throw line as they were only 2 for 8 in the final quarter. They also did not rebound well either.
Shala Pitchforth was the leading scorer against Dixie with 10 points. Camille and Ashley Hansen each scored 7 points. Alexis Swasey, Jodi Lundell, Meagan Pearson and Tahna Merrell each scored 2 points.
Camille led the team against the Panthers with 11 points and Alexis added 8 points. Shala, Tahna, Jodi and Rachel Rasmussen each scored 2 points and Ashley and Meagan each scored a single point.
Emery is at home Wednesday night as they host Uintah in the Spartan Center. Hopefully the team that was ranked number one will be there.
