The John Wesley Powell River History Museum hosted John Wesley Powell Days on Saturday in Green River. Festivities began with a breakfast sponsored by the Close-Up Club. Pancakes, eggs, ham, orange juice and coffee opened the day for those attending.
Close-Up is a group of Green River High School students who hold fund raisers to raise money for their Washington, D.C. trip every other year. The students visit the Nation’s Capitol to see first hand the works of government, and they also visit historical sites there.
Verna Watterson, JoAnn Wetherington, and Green River City Councilman Tom Burr then held games for the youngsters. The children ran foot races, three legged races, wheelbarrow races, held a water balloon toss, a water carry race, and a sack race. Councilman Burr was the starter and awarded the winners crisp $1 bills. Each participant was also rewarded with a box of Cracker Jacks.
Other activities held during the day were a father/son golf tournament at Green River Golf Course, and the 2005 Utah Service Rifle State championships held at the Green River Shooting Sports Park. Fathers, sons, and shooting enthusiasts came to Green River from all over Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming, to participate in the activities.

Winners in the golf tournament were: A Flight-first gross, Troy and Don Olsen; first net, Bruce and Kyle Lindsay; second gross, Karl and Kason Anderson; and second net, Rick and Josh Jensen. B Flight winners were: first gross, Bob and Darrell Allen; first net, Kim and Kelson Robinson; second gross, Mike and Shad Brunson; and second net Dale Johnson and Micky Kiever.

As an added attraction to the festivities, the new movie about John Wesley Powell’s adventures on the rivers in the area, The Journey into the Great Unknown, was shown during the afternoon hours in the museum. Following the movie showings, a free weiner roast, with all the trimmings, and a marshmallow toast were held.
At 7 p.m., entertainment for the evening was provided by LaVar Wells and Company. This western music band, with members from Hanksville and Green River, was a big hit. They played and sang for two and a half hours in the museum theater.
