Aubree Dinkins sets up the ball in a home game last week.

Coach Casey Fluckey has her Pirate volleyball team in a great position to advance to the play-offs this season. With three region games remaining on their schedule, Green River has a 4-1 region record.
“Although we are playing as a team with the girls really being unified in their efforts for us to excel.” Fluckey is concerned because, “We have two home games left, we have not been playing well at home. We have been playing better on the road this season, which is probably backwards for the way that it is supposed to be,” stated Coach Fluckey.
Green River has won four games in a row after an opening loss to Monticello at home. They defeated Navajo Mountain 26-24, 25-18 and 25-22 on Sept. 23. They then defeated Monument Valley 25-19, 25-15 and 25-20 the next day.
Last week they won two games, first defeating Whitehorse 25-20, 25-23, 19-25 and 25-21 and then defeating Navajo Mountain again 23-25, 25-23, 25-10 and 25-23.
The Pirates host Monument Valley this Friday night before they close out the region season next week with two games. On Thurs. Oct. 13, they travel to Monticello looking to overcome an earlier loss and then host Whitehorse on Friday night.
Green River has been playing seven girls on the varsity team. McKenzie Spadafora has been a big difference this season. She has been a defensive specialist, which means she wears an odd colored uniform, and has done a great job from the back line. She doesn’t get to serve and she doesn’t get to play the front line, she just plays the back line and has been very good at it. According to Fluckey, “She has been the biggest difference this year.”
With only the first place team guaranteed to go to state, as the others will have play-in games, the team has a lot to play for these next three games. Good luck Pirates.
