My tribute to Owen, my brother:
It has been a great experience, and an exciting and interesting adventure having you for a big brother, your life has been full of variety. From the most humble beginning and overcoming the most difficult, difficult obstacles you have gained so much knowledge and wisdom.
It seems only yesterday that you were left in charge, while mother and dad made one of their frequent trips to Manti to spend a week doing temple work. I remember how well you would fry the eggs to perfection by adding just the slightest bit of water to the hot pan to create steam and when you were in the CC Camp and taught me how to press your khaki colored uniform pants so the crease had a razor edge. I would keep at it until I got it right.
You were grateful for the training you got in the CC Camp. You went on to make your career in the construction business, building roads, dams, laying pipe lines, terracing hills and mountains to prevent soil erosion. Everywhere there is evidence of your work and you are proud to say “I did that” and we are all proud of your many accomplishments.
When World War II broke out, you were called to serve your country and were sent to Europe while Glenna stayed at home to care for two small children, David and Connie, until your return. We can all be grateful for the freedom we still enjoy.
You have worked hard to make a good living and provide a nice home for your family. I give a tremendous amount of credit to Glenna for her love and support, together you have accomplished much.
Together you were there to care for Melanie when her life was threatened with a very rare and serious illness and the many months and even years of her recovery. They you made it possible for her and for Melissa to get a college education. They now have very impressive careers.
When your cousin Waldo and his wife Natalie moved to Orangeville from California, you gave so willingly and so generously of your time and resources to help them in every way. They were included in all your activities; to dinners, family picnics, trips, rides to the desert by horse-back. Then when Waldo became terminally ill with cancer, you were there daily to give your help with love and support. You were there at his bedside when he passed away.
We love your sense of humor and your wonderful stories, they have made you famous.
You are credited with many talents, just to name a few; you are a good businessman, a horseman, a photographer, an inventor, a farmer, a geologist, a tour guide, a prospector, an engineer, a philosopher an entertainer, an organizer, an arranger and most important, a husband and father.
You have been very generous in providing for your family, Connie and Kathy have beautiful homes and whatever they need. Your sons-in-law have also prospered from your construction business and involved their children to prosper as well. You have been fair in Pat’s welfare and well-being, supporting her and David in their needs. Your giving comes from the heart with love and wisdom.
I see my brother as genuine, very sensitive and caring, with very tender feelings. You begin each day with thanks to God and grateful for all he has given, for your dogs you have trained so well, and your horses that are so grateful in the manner you provide for them.
You love people and welcome a stranger as you would a family member or friend. You have a way of putting people at ease. You’re slow to judge, leaving that to a higher being.
Your compassion and hospitality are but a few of your many virtues. One night you rescued a family and very possible saved their lives when they were stranded in the desert in cold weather. Depending on your intuition you knew right where to find them. You accepted their gratitude as payment in full.
You have been quick to respond with your resources to prevent a young man from a possible prison term. Even government officials come to you for advice and direction. You are dependable and your word is as good as a contract.
You see beauty in all things, and your stories captivate us all of your experiences of days gone by.
Yes Owen, you have made life very interesting. We love you just the way you are. Don’t ever change. You are special.
