The Emery High Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted new members and presented service awards recently.
Emery High teacher, Neal Peacock was the speaker for the event. He said when asked to speak he asked his two year old granddaughter what he should talk about. She said, “What’s up chicken butt,” and We help chuthers.”
Grandpa Neal understands babbling really well and proceeded to talk about chicken butts or rather what comes out of chicken butts. Peacock said he had two real problems as a youth. His teeth stuck out similar to a beaver and his last name was Peacock.
As a student at BYU, Peacock worked at the poultry lab where they washed and gathered 10,000 eggs per day. These eggs were used at the cafeteria and the Missionary Training Center. Each Thursday, they shoveled out the chicken houses and put the “sunshine” in wheel barrows and dumped them into the bucket of a loader which in turn dumped the chicken poop into a dump truck.
This messy business was generally quite routine and after the truck was filled it was taken to a local farmer’s field who was delighted to get a load of sunshine. One day a water line had broken and the routine scooping of chicken poop became chicken soup and a sloppy load was on its way to the farmers field, when the traffic light turned yellow and the old truck came to an abrupt stop with the runny chicken poop exploding onto the car behind the truck. The moral of the story turned out to be. You can’t spread sunshine without getting a little of it on yourself at the same time.
Grandpa Neal then talked about “helping chuthers.” He asked the students who other than their parents have made a real difference in their lives. Was it a teacher, church leader, relative, who? Peacock told of his Aunt Rae who helped make a difference in his life. She took him right along with her children to the orthodontist when his parents couldn’t afford to have his teeth fixed. “I just knew I was her favorite, but I found out at her death that everyone thought they were Aunt Rae’s favorite. She lifted people. She took care of people. Make a difference. Be that person for someone else. Who are you making a difference for? You owe something back for all the people who have taken care of you. There is nothing more honorable than being that one person for someone. You can’t spread sunshine without getting some on you. Be honorable and help chuthers,” said Peacock. “Chuthers” is Neal’s granddaughter’s word for others.
The president of the Honor Society is Katie Reynolds. She said the honor society members have been involved in service projects and have donated over 9,000 hours to their community in many forms of service including: food and clothing drives, making quilts and hats, family events, church and community volunteer hours, sporting events and many others.
Kesler Tanner is the president elect and Jasha Hinkins is the vice president, Ashley Hansen-secretary, Service coordinator, Alexis Swasey and Justin Oakeson and teacher advisor- Wendy Whittle.
