Utah Housing Corporation and Emery County School District students will host an open house for the recently completed ECHO (Educationally Constructed Housing Opportunity) home built to make homeownership a possibility for a lower-income household.
ECHO not only just helps to provide more affordable housing, but students from area high schools, trade schools and colleges learn hands-on skills while building a quality home. “Almost every student who has gone through the program has been able to find employment in the construction industry if they wanted to,” said Ed Clark, Supervisor of Career Technology Education. Once completed, the homes are sold at below-market prices to families earning 80 percent or less of the area median income. Part of the proceeds from the sale is contributed to the construction trade school.
“Partnering together with the Emery County School District provides opportunities for many. Students become familiar with the construction industry and gain skills they can use professionally and personally. This, along with an opportunity for a hard working family to purchase an affordable new home makes the ECHO program very rewarding,” said William Erickson, President of Utah Housing Corporation.
UHC created the ECHO program in 1997 to address the increasing need for quality, affordable housing. UHC provides financing for the projects. This includes acquiring the land, purchasing materials, and paying for licensed subcontractors for the homes. The 1,465 square foot rambler has three bedrooms, two baths and a two car garage.
