Eleven Emery High students who are enrolled in the Southeast Utah Applied College of Technology Automotive Technology program traveled to Weber State College on Dec. 6 to compete in the first of two portions of an automotive technology competition.
Students under the direction of Mike Kava had one hour to complete a 50 question test that covered the subjects of electrical, brakes, engine performance and front end alignments. More than 400 students from 32 Utah high schools, three Utah advanced technical colleges and six out of state high schools took the exam. The top scores earned the right for the top 11 schools to go back to Weber State College in January to compete in a hands on event. Emery High student T. J. Seeley scored high enough to place Emery High in the final top 11.
Emery High is relatively small in comparison to the other top 11 finishing schools, which were Clearfield High, Davis ATC Kaysville, Davis ATC Layton, Jordan High, Layton High, Provo High, Riverton High, Timpview High, Viewmont High and Woods Cross High.
The team from Emery will choose three of their members to compete in the hands on troubleshooting contest in January. The top two finishing schools will win for the schools a 2001 Toyota Camry, tuition wavers scholarships for the students, and tool boxes from the Snap On company with $2,000 worth of tools.
