John W. Zupon
HELPER – John W. Zupon, age 77, passed away Dec. 22, 2001 in Price.
He was born June 8, 1924 in Rains to John and Mary Herman Zupon. Married Elizabeth Mutz June 6, 1949 in Helper.
Lifelong resident of Carbon County. Member Carbon Lodge 16 F&AM. John was a member of the Helper American Legion State Champions 1940-1941 and also played semi-pro baseball in the Utah Industrial League. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a petty officer first class as a Seabee attached to the 1st Marine Division in combat in the Pacific.
Manager of the Helper Pony League State Champions in 1953. As a master electrician, John owned and operated Zupon Heating and Electric and he also worked in various coal mines in the area. Retired member of the United Mine Workers of America District 22.
Survived by his wife, Beth Zupon, Helper; son, Johnnie B. Zupon, Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Deborah Zupon, Sandy; brother, Max (Pearl) Zupon, Sun City, Ariz.; sister, Freida Dillon, Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren, Tyson and Trevor. Preceded in death by parents; infant daughter; and brother, Ed Zupon.
He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by family and friends.
Graveside service was held Thursday, Dec. 27, Mountain View Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Helper American Legion Team, c/o Fred Martinez, Helper, Utah 84526.

David Robert Mortensen
SALT LAKE CITY – David Robert Mortensen, age 68, died on Dec. 25, 2001, unexpectedly at his home in Salt Lake City. He was born May 14, 1933, in Salt Lake City, to Walter and Lucille Brown Mortensen.
As a member of the LDS Church, he served a mission in France. He spent his growing up yearsin Huntington. He was a graduate of North Emery High School and the University of Utah. David became a teacher. He loved to travel and spent time working and living in Iran, Japan, and various European countries, speaking other languages with ease.
He is survived by one brother, Lamar (Yvonna Arnold) Mortensen, South Jordon; nephews and nieces, Bert Sherman, Sandra Black, Richard Sherman, Bonnie Timmons, and Elise West.
Preceded in death by parents; sisters, Bonnie Mortensen and Eulita Sherman; and nephews, Bryan and Scott Mortensen.
Graveside service and interment were at the cemetery in Huntington, on Dec. 29, 2001.
John Montoro
HELPER – John Montoro, age 79, passed away Dec. 21, 2001 at Parkdale Care Center in Price.
He was born April 28, 1922 in Helper to James and Rose Bonacci Montoro.
Member of the Catholic Church. John was a lifelong resident of Carbon County. Served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by his sisters, Anne Bonacci, Helper; and Laura Rogers, Salt Lake City; and his loving nieces, nephews and many dear cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Jane Palanza; and infant sister, Gloria.
Funeral Mass was held Thursday, Dec. 27, St. Anthony Catholic Church. Vigil service was Thursday at the church in Helper. Committal service, Mountain View Cemetery, Helper, under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Lyman Draper
WEST JORDAN – Lyman Daniel Draper, age 67, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at his home.
Lyman was born Nov. 30, 1934 in Mt. Pleasant to Oliver and Irel Reynolds Draper. He married Margo Ann Cole on Oct. 17, 1957 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Lyman is survived by wife, Margo, West Jordan; children, Daniel (Diana) Draper, South Jordan; David (Collett) Draper, Battle Creek, Mich.; Deborah Dean, Pahrump, Nev.; Jeffrey (Becky) Draper, Bluffdale; Michelle ( Scott) Haskell, West Jordan; Steven (Kim) Draper, West Jordan; Kevin (Richelle) Draper, West Jordan; 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Lyman was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jim and Bobby; and four sisters, Anna, Dean, Lola and Emma.
Services were Saturday, Dec. 29, at Magleby-Furner Mortuary in Mt. Pleasant. Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant City Cemetery, with military honors provided by VFW Post 9276 of Mt. Pleasant.
Paul Palmer
HUNTINGTON – Our beloved Paul E. Palmer, age 81, passed away at Castleview Hospital in Price on Dec. 28, 2001.
He was born Jan. 23, 1920 in Mohrland to George Leo and Myrtle Ann Kirby Palmer. He married Viola Larsen on June 1, 1940 in Huntington and they were later sealed together in the Manti LDS Temple in 1957.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army.
Paul had been a coal miner, a carpenter and a craftsman. He was a true fish-a-holic and an avid gardener.
He will be missed greatly by wife, Viola Larsen Palmer, Huntington; six children, Karren and Orson Justice, Huntington; Phillip and Suzanne Palmer, Price; Tamara and Moli Mau Tupai, West Jordan; Larry and JoyLynn Palmer, Henderson, Nev.; David and Shella Palmer, Huntington; 25 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Edwin.
A viewing was held Monday, Dec. 31, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Huntington LDS Stake Center. Funeral services followed at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Huntington City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary, Castle Dale.
