Garth Childs, chief of the Huntington Volunteer Fire Department for more than 25 years, has been selected as the Utah Power/Utah Jazz Community Most Valuable Person for the month of January 2002.
Childs will be recognized for his contributions to his community during halftime of the Jan. 30, Utah Jazz game in the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. Bill Landels, executive vice president of Utah Power, and a representative of the Utah Jazz will present him with a special plaque and other recognition awards for his outstanding community involvement.
He was nominated by Huntington City Council member, Norm Richardson. Childs brought the first formal training programs to the Huntington Volunteer Fire Department in the early 1970s. In addition to serving as volunteer fire chief, Childs serves as an emergency medical technician, something he’s been doing for more than 23 years, and is also a member of the Emery County Sheriff’s Posse, the Emery County Fire Department, and is a special deputy fire marshall for the state of Utah. Childs also gives his time to the Boy Scouts of America in Huntington, and is a veteran of the Vietnam and Gulf wars.
“Through our association with Garth, we have never known a time when he was not actively involved in service to others, to his family, and to our community,” said Richardson. “He has spent a lifetime in community service.”
The Community MVP program is a partnership between Utah Power and the Utah Jazz that recognizes individuals throughout the intermountain area who make significant contributions to improving their communities through volunteer activities. The MVP program recognizes individuals in six categories: Education, Public Safety, Environment, Senior, Youth, and Human Service. MVPs are selected based on nominations. Nomination forms are available on the Utah Jazz web site, UtahJazz.com. Nominations will be accepted through April. Garth is married to Alyce Geary Childs and they are the parents of four children, Kimberly Monson, kate Bird, Kevin Childs and Kalvin Childs. They have three grandchildren, Kaira and Kameron Monson and Derek Childs.
