After having been delayed several times during the past several months, the Bureau of Land Management travel plan for the San Rafael Swell has been completed.
Termed the San Rafael Route Designation Plan Environmental Assessment, it is intended to address travel within two categories of the BLM’s San Rafael Resource Management Plan. The 1991 plan did not designate specific roads and trails within the “limited to designated roads and trails” and “open with seasonal restrictions” category. The assessment designates specific routes within both categories.
In a letter sent to stakeholders, Tom Rasmussen, acting field officer manager for the BLM’s Price Field Office said that the assessment is confined to only those public lands that fall within those two categories. Lands within the closed or open categories are not a subject for analysis, he said, and the environmental assessment does not change any OHV categories as proposed in the resource management plan.
The assessment is available to the public on the Internet at PriceBLMtravelplan.com. Paper copies of the environmental assessment are also available for review at the BLM Price, Moab, Utah State Office in Salt Lake, and Grand Junction, Colo. Locally, additional copies are available at the Emery County Commissioners Office and the Carbon County Court House.
