Canyon View Boys Beat Helper for Championship

The Canyon View Junior High Cougars met the Helper Rams for the championship of the Castle Valley Athletic Association’s Basketball tournament on Thursday at San Rafael Junior High.
Canyon View was first to jump out and score eight unanswered points. Bodie Marshall of CVJH put in two more points before Helper scored two. Helper came to life and added four more points and the score stood at CVJH 10 and HJH 6 with 2:15 left in the first quarter. CVJH added four more points to lead 14 to 6 with 1:36 left in the first quarter. Brad Sitterud hit a jumper to add two points to the CV tally and at the end of the first quarter CV lead 18-10.
The second quarter began with a quick three by Sitterud and Marshall added two more to his total. With 6:40 left in the second quarter CV was up 25-10. Marshall put in two more points and was fouled in the effort, but could not add the extra point. Marshall with the hot hand quickly dropped two more in with a jump shot. Helper added a few points of their own but left for the half time break down 40-24.
CV came out of the half smoking with Marshall, Joey Bernard, Bruce Clement and Daniel Espino all adding quick baskets. The score stood at 54-38 with 2:43 left in the third quarter. David Justice came alive at the end of the third quarter adding two, then three and then two more in rapid succession and at the end of the third quarter CV led 61-42.
Marshall began the fourth quarter with a quick two and was fouled in the process but could not convert on the free shot. CV led with 6:36 to go 63-48. Marshall again swished a two and then a three to boost the CV total to 68-54 with 4:54 to go in the fourth. Clement added two and Justice added two. Justice was fouled and converted on one of the two free shots.
CV did a bit of fouling on the Helper end of the court as Marshall and Justice each picked up fouls. Kevin Dull got into the defensive effort as he rejected a Helper shooter. On CVs trip down the court they lost the ball out of bounds and the score stood at 76-58 with 2:45 left in the fourth. Clement added two points to the CV score. Espino came down the court and was fouled. He went to the line and put in one of the two free shots. The score stood at 79-60. Justice ended the scoring efforts for the Cougars by adding two baskets at the end of the game. Helper attempted a three at the buzzer but was denied and the score stood at 83-62. The Cougars were presented with two trophies. One was for winning league play and the other was the tournament trophy.
