A four passenger 1978 Pyper Cherokee Lance airplane crashed near Emery on State Route 10. The plane carrying four passengers began experiencing engine problems on their way from Duchesne Airport. The plane was headed for Riverside, Calif. with a refueling stop planned for Cedar City. When the plane began having difficulties, they spotted SR10 and headed for it.
The plane came down damaging the landing gear on the left side and severing the left wing. The plane came into contact with a truck parked on the side of the road and then skidded down the side of the road, overturned and landed on its top.The truck belonged to workers replacing fencing in the area. The pilot, Fred Powers, 44 sustained minor injuries.
All passengers were treated and released at the scene. Other passengers included the pilot’s wife Paula, 43, daughter Ashley Burt, 18, and son-in-law Brad Burt, 23.
Friends from Duchesne were notified and came to pick up the family from the sheriff’s office. According to Sergeant Gale Jensen the plane and the truck were extensively damaged. “They were very lucky,” said Jensen.
The accident is under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Utah Highway Patrol. Those involved at the scene included Sergeant Jeff Horrocks, Trooper Todd Curtis, Trooper Darrell Smith, Detective Jeff Thomas and Deputy Jeremiah Johnson.
