I would like to respond to the article “Speeding through Ferron” which was in your paper on April 9, 2002.
Roy Edgell was quoted as saying: “I have had 24 kids in foster care and I’m concerned about their safety. Coal trucks come by and shake the house. The other day my son was almost hit by a coal truck. I have been in an accident with a coal truck. I think the speed limit is too high and the study was bogus. They need to hide in the bushes and stay all night.”
I would like to know which of his kids he’s concerned about; the one’s that play in the road or the two daughters that drive coal trucks?
Coal mining is a big industry in this area, employing a lot of people. Coal trucks are a necessity in this industry. How many coal miners do you think would be mining coal if there was no way to transport it? There are a lot of people out there bad mouthing coal trucks without having thought this issue through. Driving a coal truck is not an easy job. Drivers deserve a lot more respect than they are getting.
