Verna Johnson


Verna Fassio Johnson “Tootsie” age 74, passed away suddenly April 22, 2002 in Price with her daughter at her side.
She was born July 16, 1927 in Price to James and Glenda Pickup Fassio. Verna married Joe Hills Johnson June 7, 1950 in Price.
She was a member of the LDS Church. As lifelong residents of Price she and Joel contributed much to this community over the years. They were both active in Rotary International and she enjoyed accompanying him to his many banking and civic activities. Verna worked for JC Penney Co. for over 34 years where she cherished her many friendships with associates and customers. Her primary love was her family, supporting her daughter in her musical pursuits and caring for her husband until his death in 1996. Her grandchildren were the love of her life. She and her mother “Grammy” cared for each other until her passing in 1999. Thanks to wonderful neighbors and friends she has been able to remain in the home that she cherished.
Verna is survived by her loving daughter, Jan her husband Jay Bryner; their four children, Joshua, Jeni Jo, Jordan and Jaden, all of Sandy. She had a special place in her heart for her nephew, Alan Peterson, wife Lori, and their daughter, Shauntel, of Carbonville. She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Joel; sister and brother-in-law, Joanne and Richard Peterson.
Funeral services will be Saturday, April 27, 11 a.m., in the Price LDS 5th Ward Chapel. Friends may call Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial, Price City Cemetery.

Bud Petersen


HELPER – Elmer “Bud” Petersen, age 90, died April 15, 2002 at Castleview Hospital in Price.
He was born April 12, 1912 in Salt Lake City to Peter Lauritz and Marie Mickelsen Petersen. Married Leah Eleanor Taylor, May 19, 1932 in Price. She died Feb. 23, 1968. Married Jane Kirkwood Nov. 13, 1974 in Elko, Nev.
Bud was a retired member of the United Mine Workers of America Castle Gate Local 1681 with 39 years of dedicated service.
Bud loved fishing, hunting, and he especially enjoyed the outdoors scenery at Scofield and Avintaquin.
He will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by wife, Jane Petersen, Helper; daughters, Bonnie Miner, Belle View, Wash.; Trish (Alan) Lunelli, Carbonville; sons, Taylor (Nonna) Petersen, Hilo, Hawaii; Bob (Joy) Petersen, Hurricane; stepchildren, Sharon (Deke) Hreinson, Helper; Earl (Debbie) Kirkwood, Hotchkiss, Colo.; Charles Kirkwood, Helper; brother, Paul Petersen, Salt Lake City; 15 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by daughter, Faye Ann; sister, Matha Hackworth; brothers, Harry “Eddie” Carlsen and Lauritz “Larry” Petersen, stepson, Guy Kirkwood; son-in-law, James Miner.
Graveside service, Thursday, April 18, 1 p.m., Mountain View Cemetery, Helper. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Sheridan Ferris Nelson


WEST JORDAN-Ferris Nelson, age 64, passed away April 15 after an extended illness.
Sheridan was born Dec. 10, 1937 in Ferron, to Ferris and Cleo Hitchcock Nelson. He attended South Emery School and later joined the U.S. Navy where he served in the South Pacific as an International Morse Code Radio Operator.
After an honorable discharge, he married Sandra Bell; they lived in Brigham City, where Sheridan worked for the police department. They had two children, Sherry Lee and Kathleen. They were later divorced. He married Kathy Helmcamp and they had one daughter, Robin. They lived in Spokane, Wash. where he was a Loss Prevention Officer for Skaggs Drug Stores. They were later divorced. He met and married Martha Cisco on Feb. 24, 1984 in Renton, Wash.
Sheridan is survived by his wife, Martha, of 18 years; and two daughters, Sherri Lee(Scott) Jensen, Robin (Richard)Bay and six grandchildren, who brought much happiness to his life; stepchildren, Robert Cisco and Jeanie Cisco Bond.
Sheridan was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen; his father, Ferris; and mother, Cleo.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 19, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the River Oaks First Ward, 8825 South 1095 West, West Jordan. Interment took place in the Ferron Cemetery, Ferron.

Nyoka Van Sickle


Nyoka Olene Tripp Van Sickle, age 52, passed away April 19, 2002. She was born on Oct. 3, 1949 in Jasper, Ga. to James Franklin and Mildred Olene Folsom Tripp.
She enjoyed quilting, crafts, collecting figurines, sewing, making dolls, puzzles, reading and genealogy. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints serving in scouting and as a temple coordinator. Nyoka was also a volunteer at the Molen Cemetery.
She is survived by children; Felicia Reynolds, Cedar Hills; Michelle Gourdin, Highland; Bill Van Sickle, Salt Lake City; Brent Van Sickle, Ferron; Bryan Van Sickle, Price; Nicole Van Sickle, Ferron, Jamin Van Sickle, Price; close friend, Doug Wright; four grandchildren. Also her siblings, Judy Tripp, Pensacola; Cindy Sawyer, Africa; James A. Tripp, Montgomery; James F. Tripp Jr., Houston; Janice Tripp, Savanna; Dan Tripp, Atlanta. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Albert E. Tripp.
Funeral services will be held April 25, at 11 a.m. at the Ferron Stake Center. Friends may call one hour prior to service. Interment will be in the Ferron Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.

Don Cranford


PRICE/FERRON – Donald S. Cranford, age 68, passed away April 19, 2002 in Price surrounding by family and friends. Born March 27, 1934 in Danville, Va., to Howard S. and Elsie Me Tipton Cranford. He married Jessie Lou Jensen March 22, 1969. She passed away in 1990.
He worked his entire life as a truck driver and coal miner and was a devoted fan of BYU football.
He is survived by son, Terry McCourt, grandchildren, Tiffany and husband, Russell); Bloomer and Willie McCourt, all of Fruita, Colo.; four great-grandchildren; brother, Sam Cranford and wife, Mickey), of Price; sister- in-law, Joan Cranford, Price; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, April 24, 1 p.m. in the Ferron City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.

Ruth Carolyn Gannon


HUNTINGTON- Our loving mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother, Ruth Carolyn Gannon, age 71, passed away April 16, 2002.
She was born Nov. 15, 1930 in Cleveland, Ohio. To Desmond R. and Marcelitte I. Hilfert Gannon. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and many friends. Ruth is survived by her four children, Deborah Hair, Duane Brunn, Rebecca Robertson, and Michael Golden; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held April 19, in the Huntington Cemetery.
