Students, teachers and members of the community gather as the new flag is raised. |
Huntington Elementary School flies the American Flag proudly day in and day out. This old and faithful flag was showing its wear from many years of service. The students raise the flag each morning at the beginning of school and take it down before the bell rings in the afternoon. Principal Tom Baltzer decided the time had come for the old flag to be retired and a new flag to be raised in its place.
Cub Scouts and their leaders from Pack 903 and pack 304 were asked to help with the retirement ceremony. The scouts presented some facts on flags and a story was read on the proper way to retire a flag. The scouts cut the flag into equal pieces and then it was placed into the fire to be burned. After the fire was extinquished the ashes were buried in a flower bed by the school.
Bruce Clement played taps on the bugle for the retiring flag. The new flag was then hoisted up the flag pole by the scouts as the entire school witnessed the solemn occasion.
