Cleveland Town Council met in their regularly scheduled meeting on June 13. Mayor Jeff Horrocks, council members Freda Fillmore and Karen Nielsen as well as Jamie Jensen, town recorder and treasurer.
The council donated $250 to the 4-H riding club in return for their willingness to complete a service project for the town. The council donated $150 to an eagle scout project which will be built by scouts, Jacob Powell and Bryant McMullin. They will be constructing a bus stop shelter at 9th West and Cottonwood Drive.
The Cleveland Youth Council has plans to construct a BMK/skate park in Cleveland. The property for the park is being donated. The youth council is taking a letter around to local businesses for pledges of support for the project. The plans have been written and the insurance coverage has all been approved. The sponsors will have their business advertised in a Cleveland Town flyer. Also banners and a plaque with sponsor names will be located at the park. The youth council is working towards this goal and needs the support of local business to create this recreational opportunity for the youth.
The Cleveland Town budget for the year 2002 was amended to show changes in the amount used for curb and gutter; also the amount of the Olympic refund was added on. Funds received from the community impact board for park improvements in the amount of $8,750 was added on.
Mayor Horrocks explained some of the improvements to the park which have been accomplished so far. The asphalt for the parking lot has been finished and the concession building is up. Right now they are discussing what type of trees to plant at the park. They want fast growing trees which will provide shade. It has been recommended that fruitless Mulberry trees be planted because they grow fast. It was also mentioned that they would not plant the grass at the new park this year, due to the drought.
The next item of business was to approve the county tax rate. Cleveland Town did not increase their portion of the taxes and it remains the same as last year. Jensen said the town will donate their portion of the liquor fund to the school for their drug and alcohol prevention month. Cleveland Town approved their budget for the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2003 with expected revenues and expenditures of $326,685.
Mayor Horrocks reminded Cleveland residents to stick to their watering schedules and when the irrigation water runs out not to use the culinary water for any outside watering. He encouraged residents to conserve water as much as possible.
Fillmore said she has been preparing the town history and pictures for the kiosk which will be placed in the park highlighting Cleveland Town. The kiosk will be installed in October.
Mayor Horrocks said they have been receiving complaints from people in regards to barking dogs in Cleveland. A letter will be prepared to send to residents encouraging them to be more neighborly in regards to barking dogs. It was also determined that the council would discuss a small cost of living increase for city employees.
Council members will be required to complete evaluation forms as part of their participation in the centennial town program. The council also discussed the upcoming Cleveland Days celebration.
The meeting was adjourned and the next Cleveland Town meeting will be on July 11 at 7 p.m.
