Top rodeo stars riding into town The San Rafael Pro Rodeo will be held on July 25, 26, and 27 at the Castle Dale Rodeo Arena. Event organizer, Shannon Hiatt said, “We have some top competitors entered in the rodeo. We have Lan Lajeunesse, who is the 1999 and 2001 World Champion bareback rider. He is from Morgan. Bareback is a physically challenging rodeo event. More riders are injured in that event than they are at bull riding. “The Wrangler National Finals rodeo is held the first 10 days of December each year and this is where the best riders earn the right to compete. They send the top 15 money winners of the year in each event to the finals. “Also registered to ride is the 2001 saddle bronc world champion, Tom Reeves. The 2001 bull rider world champion, Blue Stone from Ogden will be here in Castle Dale. He made a huge splash in his first year full time on the circuit. He was in tenth place going into the finals and he smoked them there. He also won a gold medal at the Olympics rodeo held in Ogden. Eight of the top competitors in each event from the United States and Canada competed for their country. “I think Jesse Bail is the next Ty Murray, he competes in all rough stock events; but his strengths are saddle bronc and bull. Jesse is ranked number one in the world, all around. Right now in the world standings he is number five in bull and number two in saddle bronc. He just won $30,000 in four days over the 4th of July holiday in what they call Cowboy Christmas, where they have so many big rodeos in such a short time. He has currently won $128,000 this year. “Also coming to town is the second place all around cowboy for 2000, Scott Johnston. Charles Pogue is second in the world in team roping and he’ll be here it’s not known yet who his partner will be. Mike Johnson is second in the world in calf roping and he’ll rope a calf in the Castle Dale arena one of the three nights. Kelly Wardell is second in the world in 2001 for bareback. We have so many great cowboys and cowgirls coming to town I can’t name them all. “The draw system is complicated in rodeo but it is a fair system. Ike Sankey is our stock supplier for the rodeo. He will submit which stock he will be putting in and on which night and the PRCA will draw the matchups. The cowboys know the horses a lot of the horses have been bucking for a lot of years. Skoal Jamboree has been at it for 13 years. Some of the horses will drop a colt every spring and still be back on the circuit. Sometimes they give them a year off and sometimes Ike will retire a horse or bull after they have some great wins. The calfs are always rotated because after they reach a certain weight then they can’t compete anymore. “Ike really knows his stock and he has a good blood line. His stock is in demand. He will take stock to some high school rodeo finals, collegiate finals and around 20 PRCA rodeos a year. Right now he is on a seven rodeo run. He supplies the most stock to the finals in Vegas. There is a Wrangler Summer Rodeo Tour and a winter tour. He supplies stock to those as well. The finals of these rodeos on the tours are televised. This is giving the sport of rodeo a lot of exposure. You can watch a rodeo practically every weekend. Vernal is on the summer tour. In order to even be considered for the tour, the purses have to be $5,000 per event. There are a lot of other requirements as well to be a televised rodeo. “We have a lot of wonderful sponsors in Emery County. The ticket sales aren’t enough to cover the many expenses involved. We have a lot of dedicated volunteers on our committee as well that help ensure the rodeo’s success. It is a team effort and it takes everyone to make it happen. The San Rafael Pro Rodeo is getting bigger each year and the crowds are growing. We have a financially sound rodeo and the auditors say we have a good system. The rodeo is getting better each year. “Local cowboys that the crowds should come out and see include the Truman brothers, Justin and Brock from Huntington and Will Payne from Cleveland. With rodeo participants here from throughout the United States there should be plenty of action,” said Hiatt.

Worship Service

The Desert Edge Christian chapel will hold their annual Bear Canyon Worship Service at the Bear Canyon Campground in Huntington Canyon on Aug. 11 at 11 a.m. The agenda includes Spanish Mission Commissioning, baptisms, barbeque, potluck lunch and games. Everyone is welcome at this activity. Call 687-2933 for more information. The Spanish Church of Rock Springs Worship Team will also be at the event.

Green River 24th of July

The theme for the day is, “Our Patriotic Past.” Activities will include a two mile Pioneer Run at 6 a.m. Meet at the LDS Church parking lot. For more information, call Kevin Mitchell at 564-8325. A parade will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants should meet at the firehouse at 6 p.m. Grand Marshals for the activities are Duane and Penny Riches. Entrants to the parade will be judged and a prize awarded for 1st place. Festivities at the park after the parade will include, eating sloppy joes, playing games, bobbing for apples, water slides and root beer floats. Live entertainment will be presented by Ladiez 1st at 8:30 p.m. at the park. Fireworks will be at dark at the old dump site, personal fireworks are also permitted.

Huntington City

Huntington City secondary water schedule. There will be no watering from 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. Even numbered houses and lots will water Monday and Thursday. Odd numbered houses and lots will water Tuesday and Friday. Churches, schools, mobile home parks, cemetery, ball fields and city park will water Wednesday and Saturday. Absolutely no watering on Sunday. Anyone not following the water schedule or wasting water will be subjected to penalties. 1st offense-warning, 2nd offense-citation, 3rd offense-loss of secondary water for season.

Summer Swimming Pool Hours

Castle Dale City swimming pool summer schedule will go as follows. Aquasize: Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 5:30-6:30 a.m.; Monday-Friday, 7:30-8:30 a.m.; Laps: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 6:30-7:30 a.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 5:30- 7:30 a.m.; Family Night: Monday 7-9 p.m.; Open Swim: Monday-Saturday, 12- 7 p.m. For more information call the pool at 381-5298. The pool will be closed on July 24.

Castle Dale Area Needs Host Families

Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive very soon for academic semester and year program homestays, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families. Fair Exhibits

Everyone is welcome to exhibit their best home canned fruits and vegetables in the County Fair. Bring exhibits on July 30 at the new Emery County Fair Building. Exhibits will be judged on July 31 and will be on exhibit. Pick up items on August 5.

Ferron Memory Afghan

Old Mill Camp is selling Ferron Memory Afghans. They are selling these afghans to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the settlement of Ferron. They contain historical images as well as current Ferron sites. Call 384-2648 or 384-2902 for more information.

2002 Summer Story Time

The Summer Reading Program will be from 11-11:30 a.m. at Castle Dale Library. On July 30 they will be having an awards ceremony.

Cleveland Days

ClevelandDays will continue this week. These are the events on the following days; July 23, family barbecue and sidewalk art contest 4:30 p.m., 3 on 3 basketball and free throw competition 6 p.m.; July 24, karaoke contest and music by encore 7 p.m. and fireworks at dusk.

Volleyball Camp

There will be a Volleyball camp at the Emery High School on July 25-27. Grades 9-12 will be held from 7-10 a.m. Grades 6-8 will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. There will be a charge for the camp. Instructors are Ferd Allred the Emery High School Coach and McKelle Stilson.

Carnival at Emery County Fair

There will be a new carnival at the Emery County Fair this year. Advance tickets are available at Carbon Emery Insurance, Emery County Treasurer, Castle Dale City, Orangeville City, Ferron City and Country Corner Store. You will save on over the gate prices. The carnival will run from July 24-27 at Stewarts parking lot.

Pie Baking Contest

Emery Town will be having a pie baking contest as part of their 24th of July celebration. Everyone is invited to enter and there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes for both single and double crust categories. Have your pie at the Emery Church by 2 p.m. on July 24. Driver Safety Program

AARP-55 Alive, Drive Safety Program classes will be held at the Southeastern Utah District Health Department on July 30-31 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. (with lunch break). To reserve a spot call 637-3671. This class is designed for drivers age 50 and over and may make you eligible for a multi-year automobile insurance discount.

Fair Guides

The fair guides for this year are located in the libraries and city halls, the court house and the chamber of commerce.

Canyon View Football

Football starts on August 15 at 6 p.m. There will be a participation fee, that includes shorts, mouth piece, shirts, socks, and equipment rental. You will need a physical if you did not play sports at the junior high school last year. Any questions call coach Eric Mortensen 687-5022.

Utah Shakespearean Festival

The Utah Shakespearean Festival for the summer season of 2003 will be held through Aug. 30 and the fall season from Sept. 18 through Oct. 18. The summer season will include William Shakespeare’s, “Measure for Measure, Much Ado about Nothing, and Richard III”, also the historical musical 1776, Born Yesterday and The Servant of Two masters. The fall season will feature Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors,” the musical comedy Little Shop of Horrors, and the Oscar Wilde comedy, “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

24th of July Celebration

There will be a 24th of July Celebration for Castle Dale and Orangeville residents. It will begin with a flag ceremony at 7 a.m. followed by breakfast at the Stake Center Pavilion in Castle Dale and Orangeville City Park. Marinated BBQ turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be that night at 6 p.m. under the rodeo grounds tent. There will also be live entertainment and fireworks at dusk. There will be a small charge for the breakfast and dinner and remember to bring your own plates.

Swap Meet

CEU will be holding a swap meet on August 3. You may sell items there and need to contact Sharon at 613-4384 to reserve a space. The swap will go from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Aaron Jones Parking Lot, 300 East 600 North, Price.

Benefit for Rocky Olsen

Huntington Lion’s Club presents the 2nd Annual Country Hoe Down in benefit for Rocky Olsen who has leukemia. It will be held on August 17 at the Huntington park. There will be a BBQ dinner and raffle from 5-7 p.m. and entertainment by the Val Jensen’s RT 10 Band from 7-9 p.m.

Veterans, Widows and Dependents

A field Service Officer from the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), will be in the area to assist you in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits, preparing and documenting application for compensation, pension, hospitalization and other benefits. This is a free service and veterans need not be members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars to qualify for assistance. The VFW Field Service Officer will be working out of the Price Workforce Service Center from 9-11 a.m. on August 21.

Support Group

Bringing hope to single moms support group and self-reliance class now being offered in Castle Dale. Open to the public free of charge. It will be held on Thursday evenings from 7-8 p.m. There will be on site child care available with prior notice. The course offers self-reliance skills, recourses, skills on setting up a safety net and starting a new life plan. For more information call Jennifer at 381-2827 or Jackie at 637-5542.

Southeastern Utah District Health Department is offering a clinic for women between the age 40- 64. Get a private check-up by a female provider. Get a pap test and breast exam.
