Helen Simmons
LAWRENCE- Helen Elizabeth Holst Simmons, age 80, passed away Nov. 4, 2002 after a long illness with many complications.
She was born June 4, 1922 in Salt Lake City to Louis Rasmus and Constance Buchtrup Holst. Married Alma Harold Simmons on Sept. 27, 1940 in Salt Lake City. Together, they raised their family in a loving home and continued their loving relationship for 62 years.
Helen was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. She served as a den mother in the Cub Scouts program along with other church functions during the 1950s and witnessed to her faith by the example she set.
Her greatest pleasure in life was her family. She always put her family’s needs above her own.
She had a good and giving heart, which she demonstrated through her selflessness.She will be remembered for her quick and wry wit, which was always so much fun to be around.
She was honest, unpretentious and always to the point.
She loved classical music, history, an old western movie and a good mystery.
Survived by her husband of 62 years, Harold; two children, Shari Carroll, Holladay; Tim (Diane) Simmons, Lawrence; sisters, Ellen Hampton and Ruth (Ren) Howard of Salt Lake City; her grandchildren, Alice Blossom, Texas; Mark (Donna) Carroll, Washington; Sara (Jason) Lamb, Helper; Paul (Brianne) Simmons, Lawrence; Josh Simmons, Price; and 10 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters and son-in-law, Bob Carroll.
Funeral Mass was Friday, Nov. 8, at Ascension St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Price. Interment followed in the Lawrence Town Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home of Price.
Charlotte Herzog
PRICE – Our loving mother and grandmother, Charlotte Fenton Herzog, age 82, passed quietly at home Nov. 10, 2002.
She was born March 6, 1920 in Salt Lake City to Helen Louise Ferguson and Robert A. Fenton, Jr. She married George J. Herzog Aug. 29, 1941. They moved to Price in 1949, where they raised their children and enjoyed a loving life together. Charlotte was raised in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High, where she was active in sports and set several speed skating records.
Charlotte and George enjoyed golf, boating, fishing and many outdoor activities with their family. She was secretary of UMWA District 22, and was a member of Naomi Chapter 13 Order of Eastern Star, Ladies Auxiliary VFW, and the United Community Methodist Church in Price. Charlotte enjoyed cake decorating; many brides in Price will remember her for the loving work she did on their cakes. She was very artistic and creative and always trying to find new and exciting things to do for friends and family.
She is survived by three children, Christine (Jerry) Hurd, Sidney, B.C.; Coleen Herzog, Scott (Laurey); grandchildren, Chalice, Joan, Amathena, Shane, all of Price; sister, Marilyn (Sherman) Ford; and daughter-in-law, Evelyn, of Salt Lake City. Preceded in death by parents; sister, Helen; husband, George; and two children, Karen and Keith. Special thanks to the Methodist Church and Community Nursing Services, and Senior Citizens Center of Price.
Friends and family are invited to join in a memorial Celebration of Life on Thursday, Nov. 14, 1 p.m., at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 E. Main, Price. Family will be at Mitchell’s Thursday, one half hour prior to service.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Fairfax Road at Virginia Street, SLC, UT 84103 (specify “Donations” after address).
Jesus Candelaria Demis ‘Candy’
COLUMBIA – Jesus Demetrio “Demis” Candelaria, our beloved father, age 77, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, in Taylorsville while surrounded by his family.
Born Dec. 29, 1924 in Rosa, N.M., to Demetrio and Anastacita Velasquez Candelaria. Married Cordelia Marquez May 29, 1950 in Lumberton, N.M. Later that year, they moved to Columbia, where he resided until the time of his death. Dad was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Honorably discharged from the U.S. Army during World War II and was also awarded the Purple Heart. He retired from Carbon County Railway after 33 years of service. He was a gifted guitarist and shared his musical talents with family and friends. He enjoyed baseball and was a Little League coach for 20 years.
He loved spending time with his family and friends.
Survived by his children, Leonard (Edna), Taylorsville; Genie (Ralph) Herrera, Taylorsville; Demis (Carmen), West Jordan; Andy (Eva) Taylorsville; Paul (Maria), East Carbon; Donald (Kristy), Sunnyside; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He is also survived by one sister and five brothers, Mary Jane (Tranky) Griego, Aztec, N.M.; Joe Max, Bloomfield, N.M.; Carlos, Aztec, N.M.; Rudy (Susie), Durango, Colo.; Donald (Lydia), South Gate, Calif.; Stevan (Diana), Kirkland, N.M.; and brother-in-law, Ray Gutierrez. Preceded in death by his wife, Cordie; his parents; a special sister, Josephine (Lala) Gutierrez; two sisters who passed away at an early age; and sister-in-law, Celia Candelaria. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Nov. 9, Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Holy Rosary was recited Friday evening at the church in East Carbon. Committal service, Price City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Our thanks and appreciation to the many doctors and nurses at the Huntsman Cancer Clinic, university medical center, and the IHC Hospice team who care for our beloved father.
Gilbert Wiggains
PRICE – Gilbert (G.S.) Stanton Wiggains, age 64, died Nov. 6, 2002 in Price.
He was born Aug. 30, 1938 in Meade, Kan. to Ernest Abe and Pernia Sonia Sherrell Wiggains. Married Nancy O’Green in 1971, they later divorced.
He attended Kansas State where he received an agricultural engineering degree. Wiggains was a wheat farmer from Blunt, S. D., and a 20 year resident of Utah.
He is survived by daughter, Sonia Ann Wiggains, Price; stepdaughter, Frankie Lynn Wiggains Hathaway, Helper; and granddaughter, Chelsea Wiggains. Preceded in death by parents.
Memorial service Wednesday, Nov. 13, 4 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Rocky Mountain Hospice, 60 East 100 North, Price, UT 84501.
Cody Utley
AZTEC, N. M. – Cody Rae Utley, 24, was killed in a car accident in Tucumcari, N. M., on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002.
He was born in Price, on Sept. 4, 1978.
Cody had many interests, all of which he was dedicated to. He loved the out of doors and anything to do with dirt bikes and 4×4 trucks but most of all, Cody loved his family. Not only was he big in stature but even bigger in heart and he will be missed by all that knew him.
Cody is survived by wife, Tersa Kosec Utley; and their children, Thomas James and Brionna L., of the family home in Aztec, N. M.; mother, Darlene Blevins; one brother, Michael Romero and wife, Amanda; one sister, Daniel Blevins; and one niece, Kiara Romero, all of Helper. Also survived by grandparents, Frank and Ann Utley, Farmington; John and Edith Howard, Price; great-grandparents, Pete and Darlene Howard, Price; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends.
Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 9, at Cope Memorial Chapel of Aztec, N. M. Funeral services were also held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Scofield, Monday, Nov. 11. Burial, Scofield Community Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, family requests contributions be made in Cody’s name at the Wells Fargo Bank in Aztec.
