After surprising victories over the top two ranked teams in Utah 3-A boys basketball the previous week, the Spartans followed up last week with wins over Union at home and Tooele on the road.
As will probably be the case all season, last Wednesday’s game with Union turned into a game of inside height versus Emery’s outside shooting. Emery won 74-61.
Emery has hit 38 three-point shots through the first four games with 6 different players hitting three’s.
Against Union, Emery took a first quarter lead of 22-15 behind the scoring of Chandler Pearson with 11 points and Bowie Jeffs with eight.
The Spartans maintained this lead throughout the game despite the inside scoring of Chris Truman, a 6’6″ post player, who finished with 26 points for the Cougars.
Four Emery players finished the game in double figures led by Jeffs with 23 and Pearson with 18. Seth Powell and Brandon Hansen also contributed 10 points each.
On Friday, the Spartans hit the road for the first time this year and came away with a 64-54 victory at Tooele.
Emery led 7-3 when the Buffaloes went on a 17-0 run to lead 20-7. In the second quarter, the Spartans got back into the game by outscoring Tooele 20-10 to trail by three at half time.
With Emery’s man defense throwing Tooele off, the Spartans held Tooele to just three points in the third quarter to lead 44-35.
The Spartans led by 15 points with two minutes left and won the game 64-54.
Again the Spartans were led by Jeffs with 25 points and Pearson with 18. Hansen chipped in 11 and Powell and Curt Jensen had five a piece.
This week the Spartans are on the road at Pleasant Grove Wednesday before coming home Friday and Saturday to host the Fifth Annual Coal Country Classic.
Park City, Tooele and Uintah will be in town.
