Art Van Wagenen
CARBONVILLE – Ardath D. Van Wagenen, age 83, passed away Jan. 11, 2003 after a long battle with cancer.
Born Dec. 11, 1919 in Provo to David Roscoe and Bessie Hedenberg Van Wagenen. Married Elsie E. Malaska April 16, 1947 in Provo.
Longtime resident of Carbon County and graduate of Carbon High School. Served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II in the South Pacific. Art spent his working career coal mining and in 1985 retired from Sufco as assistant superintendent.
Art lived for gardening and his yard was his pride and joy. He enjoyed reading, hunting, and fly fishing with his boys. In his younger days, Art was very talented with oil paintings. He will be dearly missed by his family and many longtime friends.
Survived by wife, Elsie Van Wagenen, Carbonville; sons, Rick (Linda) Van Wagenen, Salt Lake City; Brad (Ione) Van Wagenen, Salt Lake City; daughters, Charlotte Van Wagenen, Salt Lake City; Janie Van Wagenen, Carbonville; Laura (David) Lundquist, Tulsa, Okla.; grandchildren, Andrew and Christopher Van Wagenen, Erika and Danielle Lundquist; sisters, Maureen Zabriski, Provo; Ruth Robinson, Orem; and special friend “Jennie” (the big brown dog). Preceded in death by parents; brother, Roscoe Van Wagenen; and sisters, Bliss Chipman, Nadine Griffiths and Avis Sutton.
Graveside service Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1 p.m., Scofield Cemetery. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday from 11 to 12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Tony Taylor
PRICE – Tony Lee Taylor, age 22, was tragically taken from his family on Jan. 10, 2003.
Born June 28, 1980 in Price to George R. and Juanita Kouris Taylor.
Tony had a special love for his family and he was truly the happiest when he was in the company of his family. Tony enjoyed the many beauties of the outdoors and he especially loved to go fishing. Survived by father, George (Jan) Taylor, Sandy; mother, Juanita (Jack) Withers, Price; brother, Nicholas Bruce Taylor, Sandy; sister, Brandy Taylor, Price; grandparents, Mary Taylor, Salt Lake City; Angelo (Helen) Kouris, Price; and many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss him dearly. He was preceded in death by grandfather, George Bruce Taylor.
Funeral service Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Tuesday evening, 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday one hour prior to service. Interment, Orangeville Cemetery.
Mac Kutkas
PRICE – Gary “Mac” Matthew Kutkas, age 26, passed away Jan. 8, 2003.
He was born Oct. 23, 1976 in Price, to Gary and Joyce Bejare Kutkas. Married Adriana Marquez June 11, 1999 in Price.
“Mac” enjoyed spending time with his family and playing with his children. He enjoyed fishing, watching movies and playing pool and basketball with his friends. He will be dearly missed by his family and many dear friends.

Josephine Nick Copfer
PRICE – Josephine Nick Copfer, age 79, passed away Jan. 7, 2003 while surrounded by her family at home.
She was born May 8, 1923 in Price to John and Maria Teresa Cortese Nick. She married Johnny K. Copfer in July, 1943 in San Diego, Calif. He died May 17, 1954.
Josephine dedicated her life to her family, friends and Notre Dame Church, where she sang in the choir with her sisters for many years.
Her unconditional love for everyone she met made her a very unique person. Josephine spent her life doing for others and was the happiest when she could cook a meal.
She will always be remembered for her exceptional steaks at the Matadore.

She is survived by four daughters and three sons, Judy (Brian) Albiser, Las Vegas, Nev.; Jimmy (Kay) Copfer, Price; Joyce Burnett, Las Vegas, Nev.; Joany Copfer, Jacky Copfer, Jeany Copfer, all of Price; Johnny Copfer, Las Vegas, Nev.; three sisters and three brothers, Angelina Bonvicin, Serfino Nick, Kerry Fister, Louis Nick, all of Price; Martin Nick, San Jose, Calif.; Paulmina New, Price; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; husband; brothers, Frank and Elvin Nick; and sister, Mary Juliano.

John Grako
PRICE – John B. Grako, age 85, passed away Jan. 5, 2003 at Castleview Hospital in Price.
He was born Sept. 18, 1917 in Sunnyside to Joseph and Catherine “Clara” Teano Grako. He married Vivian Brotherson Feb. 7, 1949 in Las Vegas, Nev., and their marriage was later blessed at Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church on July 10, 1982.
After graduation from Carbon High in 1935, he moved to Salt Lake City and worked in a dry cleaning establishment. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., until WWII started. He then returned to Price to enter the service in 1942 and was sent to Norfolk, Va. He went to Army Airbase Radar School in Orlando, Fla., and upon completion, he shipped overseas to Port Lyaututuy in French Morocco. During his three and one-half years as a radio operator, he was involved in battles and campaigns in Algeria, Tunisia, French Morocco, Rome, southern France, Naples, Foggia North Apennines and Po Valley. He received medals for good conduct and decorations for serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern services.
After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Price and opened the VFW Club in 1945. In 1949, he moved to Los Banos, Calif., and worked in Carlos Villa. He opened the Hub Hotel and Bar, later selling and moving back to Price in 1964. He joined his brother, Louis, at the VFW Club until 1976. He owned and operated the Savoy Club and the Price Hotel, which he still owned.
He enjoyed eating steamed clams, traveling, playing cards, playing the slots and bird watching. One of his favorite pastimes was playing chess, both against family and the computer.
He is a member of the Catholic Church, the Price American Legion Post 3, the Price Lions and a life member of Price Elks Lodge 1550.
Survived by his wife, Vivian Grako, Price; daughter, Dr. Kathy Grako and Andrew Shipps, San Diego, Calif.; sons, John Grako, Gilbert, Ariz.; Paul (Kristina) Grako, Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter, Ann (Bill) Stark and their anticipated twin sons, Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Berlinda Grako, Price; Rita Kirby, San Rafael, Calif.; Kay (Bill) Quillinan, Bothel, Wash.; grandchildren, Chris, Amy, J.P., Ben, Hayden Grako and Rachel Stark. Preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Tony Silvagni; daughter, Patricia Grako; brother, Louis Grako; and daughter-in-law, Karen Grako.
Funeral Mass Friday, Jan. 10, Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Vigil service Thursday evening, Mitchell Funeral Home. Committal service, Price City Cemetery at a later date.

Ferral Dunn
PRICE – Ferral A. Dunn, age 74, passed away peacefully Jan. 8, 2003 in Price.
He was born April 26, 1928 in Monroe to Arnold H. and Deona Nielsen Dunn. He married Clara E. White March 5, 1945 in Lyman, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple.
As an active member of the LDS Church, he served in various callings. He worked for 38 years for Mountain Bell. Being born and raised in Monroe Mountain, he never lost his love for the outdoors where he made many precious memories with his family. His family was his life.
Ferral is survived by wife, Clara of Carbonville; children, Terral and Debbie, Richfield; DeVon and Louann Dunn, Price; Hayden and Mary Dunn, Hayden, Colo.; Kevin and Rita Dunn, Price; Quinn and Becky Dunn, Pleasant Grove; Darla and Rod Lee, Price; Tav and Janet Dunn, Fairview; and Tonja and Jeremy Howa , Austin, Texas; 31 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, DeRae Darling, Jetta V. Lampretch and Carol Berthelson. Preceded in death by grandchildren, Christopher, Nicholas and Kayla.
Funeral services were held Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. in the Spring Glen LDS Chapel. Friends called Sunday evening at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Burial took place in the Cliffview Cemetery in Price.
Annie Kosec “Onchie”
SPRING GLEN – Annie Skerl Kosec, age 90, passed away Jan. 11, 2003 in Price.
She was born Aug. 5, 1912 in Sunnyside to John and Annie A. Vuksinick Skerl. She married Louis A. Kosec April 9, 1937 in Salt Lake City. He died March 23, 1991.
“Onchie” was a co-owner and longtime employee of Mutual Furniture in Helper. She was a lifelong resident of Carbon County and a graduate of Carbon High School. Annie was a 75 year member of SNPJ Lodge 689 and the Slovenian National Home in Spring Glen. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile Lybia Temple 32.
Survived by sons, Richard L. Kosec, Paul A. Kosec; sister, Martina S. (Floyd) Zemlock; brother, John M. (Gloria) Skerl, all of Spring Glen; sister, Helen S. Bittner, Lopez Island, Wash.; grandson, Adam Kosec, Greeley, Colo.; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents.
Graveside service Saturday, Jan. 18, 1 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery, Helper. Friends are invited to join the family at Mitchell Funeral Home Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to service.

Barney E. Jensen
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather, Barney E. Jensen, age 84, passed away on Jan. 8, 2003 in Ferron, surrounded by his family. He was born May 22, 1918 to Joseph E. and Estella Mariah Wilson Jensen in Lawrence, Utah. He married Jane Elizabeth Jensen Aug. 9, 1937 in Cleveland Utah, later solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple. They have spent 65 years together. He served in WWII in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific from 1943 to 1946.
Dad loved to hunt, fish and spend time with family and friends shootin’ the bull. Dad never met a person he didn’t like. He was a member of UMWA Local 1769. He worked in the coal industry for 45 years. He was actively involved in the LDS church where he served for many years as a high priest and a home teacher. He volunteered at the Senior Citizen’s Center in Huntington for 25 years. In 1999 he, along with his wife, were presented the Silver Bowl Award for distinguished service by Lt. Governor Olene Walker.
He is survived by his wife Jane of Huntington, children: Bonnie Shurtleff of Orem, James and Karen Jensen, Valinda and Thomas Roush of Huntington, eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren, sister-in-law Tessie Jensen and many other family and friends. Proceded in death by 4 brothers, one sister, son-in-law, and 2 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the Huntington First-Fifth Ward building. Friends called Friday evening Jan. 10 at Fausett Mortuary. Burial was in the Huntington Cemetary.
Calvin Powell
LEHI – Calvin Grant Powell died of lung and heart disease on Jan. 7, 2003 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center at the age of 78.
He was born to Grant and Margaret Ellen Roberts Powell on Sept. 7, 1924. Calvin married Myrna Fay Brinkerhoff on Jan. 13, 1963. Together, they have three sons and one daughter, Robert (Mindi) Powell, Gary Powell, Grant (Cindy) Powell and Margaret (Allen) McConnell.
Calvin served his country during World War II as a Marine. He loved to fish and hunt deer. He couldn’t remember yesterday, but he could remember his deer hunting trips with his kids.
He leaves behind his wife; four children; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Carol (Dee) Fausett, Price; and brother, Devon (Butch) Powell, Price.
Funeral services were held Jan. 11, at 11 a.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price. Burial will be at the family cemetery.

Louie Castillo
SALT LAKE CITY – Louie Castillo, age 26, passed away Jan. 6, 2003.
He was born March 21, 1976 in Price to Jose J. and Ester Mabel Trujillo Castillo.
He was a member of the Catholic Church. He graduated from East Carbon High School and later attended the University of Utah.
Louie enjoyed spending time with his family, especially with his nephew, Rabon.
Survived by his father, Jose Castillo, Price; sister, Christina (Rabon) Lucas; brother, Alfredo Castillo, both of Grand Junction, Colo.; brother, Chewy Castillo, Denver, Colo.; and two special nephews. Preceded in death by his mother.
Funeral Mass Saturday, Jan. 11, Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Vigil service Friday evening at the church in East Carbon. Committal service, Valley View Cemetery, Sunnyside.
