My name is Cory Collard. Last year I competed in the Emery County District Spelling Bee and placed fourth. I was looking forward to winning first place this year, but to my chagrin there will be no spelling bee this year. The reason for this is that the sponsor “Deseret News” has withdrawn their sponsorship and as of this time there is no sponsor. The Deseret News has sponsored the spelling bee for 25 years, but alas, no more. I’m writing this letter as a plea to the school district, to our local paper, and to anyone in the community to pull together and come up with a way to continue the tradition of our Emery County District Spelling Bee. I’m sure there are others who feel as strongly about the importance of this as I do. Perhaps, people in the community were unaware of the fate of the spelling bee or maybe they just don’t care. I’m hopeful it is not the latter. We need to make sure this longstanding tradition does not fall by the wayside, but is instead brought back to life by new support. It is time for somebody else to pick up the ball and run with it. I hope this letter sparks interest in this problem and someone does something about it.
