Letter to the Editor: the Patriot Act

By WILLIAM SHARP Castle Dale

Some birds will do their business in their own nest until they can no longer stand to live there. “Fouled Nest Syndrome” seems to affect many politicians and their constituents as well. In their determination to restrict, restrain and control others they forcefully fight for new laws apparently hoping to someday reach the point where everyone will be guilty of something regardless of what they are doing.
To such persons, freedom is worth very little when compared to the importance of protecting us from ourselves, or protecting the land from us etc. One of their latest “protections” (The Patriot Act) is a prime example of their determination to take away a “few freedoms” for the sake of protecting America from some future “possible” threat.
What does the Patriot Act do? Simply put it breaks the political backs of American citizens, the judiciary and legislative branches of government, bypassing their constitutional freedoms and powers.
How? 1) It allows the wholesale surveillance of private citizens, private business records and other materials without proof of probable cause.
2) It allows random arrest and detention without hearings or trials for anyone or any group designated by the President. Retroactive prosecution, too!
3) It allows the concealment of presidential records.
4) It permits secret “military tribunals” for presidentially-designated “terrorists.”
5)It legalizes “sneak-n-peek” searches and seizures.
6) It allows the unconstitutional infiltration and surveillance of legal, domestic religious, labor and political organizations.
7) It destroys all e-mail and internet privacy.
History repeats: Hitler and his like are grave reminders of the dangers of giving up freedoms for protections. We now marvel at how such men could commit such atrocities. All the while convincing their citizens that it was for their “protection.” The pattern is always the same; “for your protection we will spy on your neighbors, for your protection we want you to report on your neighbors, for your protection we must take away ‘your’ weapons, and for your protection we must remove undesirable people.” “Heck, in the case of the jews we’ll simply insist they aren’t even human, thus making it less offensive to kill them, and all for your ‘protection.'”
In Hitler’s wildest dreams it’s doubltful he ever imagined all of his grand accomplishments ending up with him putting a pistol to his own head. He fouled his own nest.
History shows that such men were short sighted. They could not see how trampling the rights of others could hurt them. The “big me and little you” of the power hungry makes them blind to the thumb they are placing on their own neck.
For example; do the lawmakers who came up with the Patriot Act want it applied to them? Not likely, they think it’s just for the bad guys.
Do those who support the killing of undesirable children (abortion) want euthanasia for them, when they become old, and not so desirable to a society that has lost its regard for human life? Since the invention of sonograms do you honestly believe these are not humans in the womb?
Does the young, able bodied wilderness advocate realize that someday they could get old or possibly disabled; barring them from the land they want to lock up?
Do those opposing the second amendment right to keep and bear arms really want to rid themselves from the right to self-defense?
There have been a few words of wisdom and warning given to us: “The man who trades freedom for security does not deserve…either.” Ben Franklin
Jeremiah 43:11 “And when he cometh, he shall…deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity.” Revelation 13:10-11 “He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity…”
