On a cold and brisk Thursday afternoon, the Emery Lady Spartans opened region play with a 22-12 victory over the Carbon Dinos. Cortni Jensen paced the Spartan victory with a pair of homeruns, four rbi’s and four runs scored. Michelle Johansen pitched the entire ball game to pick up the victory as the Spartan season record evened itself at 6-6.
After Carbon scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Emery scored five of their own on four singles and a pair of walks. Johansen then got Carbon on a ground out, a strikeout and a pop fly for three and out in the top of the second. Stacie Giles, the leading hitter this season with a .472 average, got her second single of the day to lead off the bottom of the second. Two more singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly allowed the Spartans to add three more runs and they now lead 8-2.
Carbon added two runs in the top of the third. After a pair of singles and a walk, Morgan Warburton picked a pair of rbi’s on her double up the middle. In Emery’s half of the inning, Jerrica Jensen walked and Natalee Hanson got an infield single to put two Emery runners on. Cortni Jensen then hit a solid homerun to centerfield to pick up three rbi’s and the windshield of a new Chevy truck. Emery now led 11-4.
Three Emery errors, the first of the game, mixed in with two singles allowed Carbon to score 4 in the fourth inning. Erin Anselmo was hit by a pitch, Monica Weihing walked and Stacie Giles added her third single of the day to pick up two rbi’s and Emery had two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Emery added four more runs on two walks and three straight singles by Weihing, Giles and Hanson. Emery now led 17-9.
Brittney Pollastro hit a 2-run homer for Carbon in the top of the sixth as the Dinos added three runs. Cortni Jensen led of the bottom of the inning with her second home run of the day, a monstrous shot to left field that cleared the fence by about 40 feet. Singles by Amber Gardner and Anselmo, walks to Adrian McNee and Tealee Sherman and then another single by Hanson ended the games as the Spartans now led by 10 runs, 22-12.
Carbon handed out eight more walks than the Spartans to aid in the run deficit. Every Spartan that batted scored at least one run, Anselmo and Jensen led the way with four each. Giles had four hits to lead the way as eight different Spartans collected a hit.
The Lady Spartans are at home Tuesday afternoon hosting the Delta Rabbits. Game time is 3 p.m.
