The tank for bobbing apples was a popular spot as youngsters began a water fight.

The Kid’s Cafe in Green River was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony on April 10. The Kid’s Cafe is part of the Green River Community Center and serves free meals to 40 kids after school as well as 10 senior citizens whose meals are delivered by two local teenagers. Joni Pace, from the community center said they were grateful for the many donations from the community to bring the event together. Jim Pugh and Angela Torres from the Utah Food Bank have helped to make the cafe a reality for the community center. The community has really pulled together and they are cooking six nights a week at the center. Pace also recognized Rose Lemieux as the volunteer of the month at the center. Pace recognized Christine Monroe for writing the grants commenting that she has received every grant she has written.
Pugh said, “The Kid’s Cafe program is a national program with food banks. The need for such a program was recognized one evening when a food bank was broken into by two boys age 14 and 8. They were hungry and the older brother commented that he just couldn’t stand to see his younger brother hungry any more. This was the beginning of the afterschool program where meals are served to children. There are currently 15 sites in Salt Lake and the food bank was approached by Green River community center and we were so impressed with the program here and couldn’t wait to bring the program here. Green River is doing great things to help out the youth.” The very long ribbon was cut by many city residents to officially open the Kid’s Cafe.
Dinner was served outdoors to the many visitors at the carnival and the children played games. The fire department filled a container with water and the kids bobbed for apples. There were many door prizes given away which were donated by local businesses.
