Emery County Flag Contest
It’s not too late, the deadline is May 14. Enter the contest to design a flag for Emery County. Application and contest rules can be picked up at the city halls around the county. There will be a prize for the winner.
Emery County Democrat Convention
The Emery County Democrats will be holding their county convention and dinner on May 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Museum of the San Rafael in Castle Dale. Local party officers will be elected and state party officer candidates will speak. Dinner, entertainment and prize drawing will also be provided. Tickets will be available at the door or contact your precinct chair, Kim Player or Kent Wilson.
Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit
Smithsonian Exhibition explores the diverse food traditions of America. The exhibit will open May 30 through June 27 at the Museum of the San Rafael. Visit www.keyingredients.org for an interactive website developed in conjunction with the exhibit.
Huntington Secondary Water Schedule
Even numbered houses and lots water Monday and Thursday. Odd numbered houses and lots water Tuesday and Friday. Churches, schools, mobile home parks, cemetery and city parks water Wednesday and Saturday. Absolutely no watering on Sunday. No watering from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is a violation to allow water to run onto land owned by another person or onto city streets. Anyone not following the water schedule or wasting water will be subject to penalties. Using culinary water for outside use is prohibited.
KinderSchool at Castle Dale Swimming Pool
For children ages 1-5 to prepare for swimming lessons or to introduce young children to the water in a safe environment. Moms and dads will be in the water with the child. Class schedule: May 12-16, 10-10:30 a.m. and 1-1:30 p.m. Come in and sign up or call the pool with questions.
Developmental Screening
Make an appointment for a developmental screening for your child age five and younger. This screening is free and will be held at the public health office, 25 West Main in Castle Dale, on May 16 from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Call Michelle at 381-2693 to schedule. Please bring your child’s birth certificate and immunization record. Screenings include vision, hearing, speech/language, developmental, immunization check and dental. Physicals will be available on a sliding fee scale.
Laughable Incidents on the Mormon Trail
Mel Bashore tells stories about skunks, trail romances, mosquitos and other misadventures of the pioneers in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Utah; Laughable Incidents of the Mormon Trail.” Presented by the Utah Humanities Council at the John Wesley Powell Museum at 6 p.m. on May 8.
Story Time at Castle Dale Library
Laugh it up at the Castle Dale Library. Pre-History and Heritage Tour
The Museum of the San Rafael and the Emery County Historical Society presents the Pre-History and Heritage tour. An exciting adventure to the Secret Garden. It will be held May 7 at 5 p.m. Meet at the Museum. There will be a chili and hot dog lunch, bring your own drinks, chairs, jackets and a potluck item. There will be some walking to the site. Water Conservancy Classes
The Emery Water Conservancey District will host a four hour class on conserving water with landscape irrigation. This class will cover soils, sprinkler system uniformity, how to determine the correct settings for your system and scheduling. The class will offer three CEUs for landscape managers and will be taught by Joe Whittaker, water conservation coordinator for the Bureau of Reclamation. This class is for anyone that works with the watering of lawns, cemeteries or ball fields. Please RSVP to the EWCD at 381-2311.

Honoring Moms and Dads in the Navy Log
The US Navy Memorial Foundation is encouraging sons and daughters to enroll their parents, who served in the sea services, in the Navy Log. Bio-tech Academy for Teens
Scheduled for July 14-18 on the Utah State campus, the academy is open to high school students entering the 11th and 12th grades in the 2003-04 school year. Participants work side-by-side with faculty mentors on a variety of hands-on projects, stay in campus housing and eat in campus dining halls during the five-day camp. Students may select a specific area of interest, choosing from fields such as biology, chemistry, food and nutrition sciences, biological and envoiromental engineering, plant and soil science, and animal, dairy and veterinary sciences. The Utah AHEC program at Southern Utah University is looking for high school students interested in pursuing a health care career. Unemployment Insurance Extension
On Jan. 8 President Bush signed a bill extending Unemployment Insurance benefits through May 31. This new extension does not grant additional weeks for individuals who have exhausted their Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation eligibility.
