Softball
The Emery High Lady Spartans lost two home games last week as the season comes to a close. The North Sanpete Hawks defeated Emery 11-1 on Tuesday and then the Lehi Pioneers defeated Emery 16-3 on Thursday.
The Spartans are currently 3-4 in Region 8 play with a make-up game against the Delta Rabbits scheduled for this Tuesday in Delta. This game will help settle the seeding for the state tournament from this region. In Region 8, Lehi took first place, North Sanpete took second place and the Carbon Dinos took fifth place. A win will give Emery third place, a loss will probably result in a coin toss for third and fourth. Emery will play next Saturday either at Union High School against the Union Cougars or at Tooele High School against the Park City Miners depending on the outcome of the Delta game.
North Sanpete scored in every inning as they collected 15 hits including three doubles and two triples in the game. The Spartans were able to only put together five hits and a walk as they struggled at the plate. Emery’s only run came in the last inning as Michelle Johansen singled and she was brought home on a single by Erin Anselmo.
Lehi only collected one more hit than the Spartans at 10-9, but they scored nine times in the second inning to break open the game. Emery scored twice in the second inning and once more in the third, but that was it for the day.
Baseball
The Emery High Spartans went to Lehi last week and defeated the Pioneers 11-0 to take their region record to 4-4. The Spartans earlier in the week had lost at North Sanpete.
Bowie Jeffs had a great game for the Spartans. He was the winning pitcher, as he pitched a complete game shut out. He also contributed two triples and a home run on the offensive side.
Carbon High won the region and Lehi finished last. Emery and Delta finished 4-4 and North Sanpete is 3-4. After North Sanpete completes it season, a coin toss may be needed to settle seeding. State playoffs are scheduled to start this weekend.
Track
After numerous track meets around the state, the Spartans are set to participate in the region track meet this week at Carbon High School on May 7-8.
Track is a little different when it comes to qualifying for the state meet. You can qualify either by scoring at the region meet or by exceeding preset marks in the various meets around the state.
During the various meets, athletes are often entered in a variety of events as the coaches try to find the best uses of the athlete’s talent. Emery High’s athletes should do well this week at the region meet.
