The Green River Pirates completed a stellar season with a victory in the region golf tournament last week in Roosevelt. The Pirates, undefeated for the season, shot a 344 to defeat second place Rich High by four strokes. Green River’s next challenge will be this weeks state meet held in Tooele today and tomorrow as they look to dethrone the defending champion team from Waterford.
In addition to Green River and Rich, Duchesne shot a 377 and Manila a 385 to also qualify for the tournament. Whitehorse, Uintah River, Tabiona and Altamont each posted a score higher than 400 and did not qualify.
Medalist of the region tourney was Jason Luke who shot a 76 to take honors. Mitch Bowman shot an 85 for fourth place, Gabrin Ekker shot an 88, Jerome Burns shot a 95 and CJ Vetere shot a 102. Jason was 1-under until he pressed his luck on the 17th hole and finished with a triple bogey to mess up his score.
In the three previous golf tournaments, the Pirates shot a 320 at the same Roosevelt golf course to win as Jason shot a 74 and Bowman an 80. The week before they played the Tooele course and won with a 342.
Bowman was the medalist this day with a 78 and Luke shot an 82. On April 10, they were again at Roosevelt and shot a 345.
For the season, Luke was the region medalist, Mitchell was second and Ekker was fifth.
The state tournament is a 36-hole event with the top seven teams playing the second day. Individuals within 10 strokes of the leader also earn the right to play. The golf team is coached by Blaine Luke.
