The municipal building authority board opened the bids for the construction of a metal storage building at the public safety complex at their last meeting. The building will be used for storage of the equipment belonging to the sheriff’s office. Emery County Sheriff Lamar Guymon has said that storage was a big problem at the old jail facility with equipment being stored at various points throughout the county. The new building will take care of the storage needs and have the equipment at the immediate disposal of the sheriff’s office.
The price includes erecting the building, pouring concrete, plumbing and sewer, but not the actual cost of the building. The bid of $76,852.40 for a building 50 x 150 feet was approved from Stilson Construction. The cost of the actual building is estimated at $37,758 for a total of $114,610.40. These costs are for the bare building without anything inside.
The sheriff’s office is also in need of a small concrete pad for receiving deliveries to the kitchen. The job will be advertised and the matter addressed at the next MBA meeting.
Commissioner Gary Kofford said they are interested in bringing the courts facility to a close with all costs addressed. Commissioner Ira Hatch said he was concerned about some of the subcontractors not being paid yet. Kofford said there aren’t any retainage fees involved on the courts building and Hatch suggested holding off on closing until Sahara has paid the subcontractors. He also mentioned scraping up enough funds to help some of them out.
Other MBA business included the discussion the incubator building. Don Johnson will do a structural analysis of the building to determine if it is sound or not. A discussion concerning the collection of the water bill and rent from the present tenant at the building was also discussed. It was determined that the clerk/auditor’s office would send an invoice payable by the 15th of the month with the water bill charges outlined as well. The MBA will initially pay the water bill to keep it current with North Emery Water Users and then recoup the costs from the tenant.
In the past the tenant has made repairs to the building and then deducted the cost of such repairs from the rent. The board made a note that any such repairs in the future should come before the board for approval before they are completed.
Sgt. Bill Downard from the Emery County Sheriff’s Office made the MBA aware that the courts building needs to have signs directing people to its location. On court day there were some lawyers from Salt Lake who were unable to find the building. Kofford mentioned that he would be meeting with the people from state courts in the near future and would address that problem with them.
