Bowman Mitchell, left and Jason Luke, far right, receive individual awards and were named to the academic all-state team.

Sometimes finishing third can feel alright. Even though you always would like to win, sometimes the playing field is just not slanted enough your way. The State 1-A golf tournament was just this type of event. The Green River Pirate golf team shot a 706 team score over the two-day tournament at the Links at Overlake Golf Course in Tooele and finished the year third in the state.
Winning the tournament was Waterford, as the private school shot a team low 592 total. Waterford posted the first, second, fourth, fifth and ninth best individual scores of the two-day affair.
Finishing second in the event was Wasatch Academy of Mt Pleasant, another private school, and they finished with a team score of 692.
Even though the Pirates did not win, they should take some satisfaction in knowing that they played with home-grown kids and that they won when comparing themselves to other small rural towns like themselves. They won out over Valley High by 22 shots and over Panguitch and Rich Highs by 49 shots.
Bowman Mitchell shot a team leading 159 and Jason Luke shot a 160 to pace the Pirate team. Even though Gabrin Ekker, Jerome Burns and CJ Vetere finished with higher scores, they contributed to the Pirate team that won every tournament they entered except the last and they won region among their peers. Thanks Pirates, you represented us well.
