People in Utah agriculture seeking support to explore sustainable practices can apply for competitive grants from the Wester Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program (SARE). Mormon Short Story Contest
Sunstone Education Foundation announces the 2003 Brookie and D.K. Brown Memorial Fiction Contest, with the entry deadline extended from June 30 to July 31. Categories are short stories (under 6,000 words) and short-short stories (under 1,500). Entries must in some way relate to Latter-day Saints experience, theology or worldview. Miss Orangeville Pageant
The Miss Orangeville Pageant will consist of an eight hour community service project, a luncheon with the constestants and their guests, and interview, a softball game and a final question. Miss Orangeville winners will be crowned on June 21 at Orangeville day during the lamb fry at 5 p.m.
Orangeville Day
Come celebrate Orangeville Day with us on June 21. Beginning at 7 a.m. there will be a flag ceremony and breakfast. At 10 a.m. there is a parade with events and entertainment after the parade. The Emery County Progress is asking that all the coaches of youth baseball and softball programs in the county leagues submit a photo of the team to the newspaper. If you don’t have access to a camera, call us and we will come to your team to take the photo.

Pioneer Story Time
Pioneer Museum will be holding a “Pioneer Story Time” each Friday in June at 10 a.m. for children ages four through nine. Children will experience what it was like to be a child during the pioneer times.
Utah Festival Opera
The Utah Festival Opera’s 2003 season is loaded with opportunity for patrons to become immersed in the festive and friendly atmosphere of this all inclusive 5-week event. Gallery needs Stories
The gallery in the Joseph F. Smith building, now under construction, needs stories about the educational heritage of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some ideas for stories include, but are not limited to the following: traditions of faith and learning, foundations of education in the restored gospel, early schools in Zion, education in the family and extending learning to all the world. Summer Science

Educational Opportunities
The College of Eastern Utah has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice. The Educational Opportunity Center can assist students with a variety of services including financial aid application, college course selection and completing their GED if needed. It is a free service and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. The Educational Opportunity Center is located in the College Center – Room 213. Feel free to walk in without an appointment or call Shawnee at 613-5243. During the summer, the center will be closed on Fridays.
Food Handler’s Permit

Veterans Affairs Workshop
The Utah Division of Veterans Affairs is hosting a workshop for veterans interested in obtaining employment with the federal government. Advance registration is required. Community Theater
For all community minded citizens of Emery County over the age of 18…If you are interested in becoming involved in community theater, the ECT will hold its first annual meeting for a Board of Trustees. This board will be responsible for electing the Board of Directors and having input in future productions. The annual dues will be due for each voting member. The meeting will be held in the Emery County Recreation Center in Castle Dale on June 19 at 7 p.m.
Grants for Families of Utah’s Guard and Reserves
A collaboration of Utah United Ways launched the Homefront Response last month to help Utah’s military families cope with the personal and financial burdens of U.S. war efforts. The first step is for military members and their families to identify the Homefromt agency partners in their area by visiting www.uw.org and clicking on “how to get help,” or by calling the 211 information hotline. Special Needs Children Swimming Program
Emery County Recreation will be holding registration for the special needs children swimming program on June 12 from 2-5 p.m. at the Recreation office located at 75 South 400 East, Castle Dale. The program will run from June 16-20 from 7-8 p.m. for children who are physically or mentally challenged. For more information call 381-2108.

“This Land Is Your Land” The Emery County Fair Opens celebrating the 100th birthday of the forest service. Historic exhibits at the Museum of the San Rafael; Smokey visits the kid, Aug. 5; retired employees honored at the fair parade Aug. 9.

The Outlaw Trail
Butch Cassidy and the Outlaw Trail will premier on KUED, channel 7, June 18 at 9 p.m. It will re-air June 21 at 9 p.m. This documentary reveals important new information about the life of Butch and Sundance on their Argentina ranch and in South America.
Museum of the San Rafael Exhibit
“Key Ingredients: America by Food” an exhibit from the Smithsonian Art Institution Traveling Exhibition Service is opening at the Museum of the San Rafael May 30 and will be on exhibit until June 27. June 5, opening reception and program at 7 p.m. The Begay Family will host Native American Family and Food Traditions on June 17 at 7 p.m. Pioneer Traditions and Cowboy Tales will be June 24 at 7 p.m. All programs will feature a taster’s table. Each Friday at 10 a.m. there will be a pioneer story time at the Pioneer Museum for children ages 4-9.

Driver License Office
Due to a statewide budget shortfall we received instructions to close the Castle Dale office. This directive effects all satelite offices in the state. After July 1 service should resume in the Castle Dale area. The Price office, located at 940 South Carbon Avenue is open Mon.-Fri. Office hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. The office is open during lunch, and customers are requested to be in the office one hour before closing. For more information call 637-6180.
Car Show
The San Rafael Swell Auto Association will present their annual car show at Huntington State Park on June 14. Registration from 8-10 a.m. Show till 4 p.m. Admission is free to spectators.

Fort Douglas Military Museum

Utahns Against Hunger are encouraging home gardeners to support the annual Grow a Row. By growing an extra row of vegetables to donate to your local food pantry, home gardeners can help provide fresh nutritious produce to families experiencing economic difficulties and seeking help at their local food bank. Relay for Life

Support Group
Bringing hope to single moms support group and self-reliance class now being offered in Castle Dale. Open to the public free of charge.
