The Annual Black and Gold game was held on Friday at Emery High. |
With the playing of the annual Black and Gold football game last Friday night signaling the start of the season, this year’s Emery Spartans are ready to do battle.
Under the watchful eye of new head coach Kevin Reynolds, assistants Mark Justice and Eric Mortensen guided the divided squad to some hard-hitting football to the thrill of parents, fans and cheerleaders.
The underclassmen played the first game of the evening and displayed plenty of talent to show Emery fans that they are ready to carry on the rich football tradition of Emery High.
The varsity team took the field next and with Bowie Jeffs quarterbacking both teams, the Spartans aired it out and several receivers showed lots of promise.
This year’s wide receivers appeared to be Zeke Atwood and Brandon Olsen, H-back is Isaac Bawden and a fight for starting rights at tight end is brewing between Don Greenburg and Mike Blomquist. Starters in the backfield appear to be Spencer Cook and Matt Stucki.
Playing in a passing camp at Snow College last month, this group played well and took second place. They have some talent.
The offensive line appears solid with Jordan Leamaster listed at center, Colin Jensen and Jackson Pace at guard and Keaton Cowley and Bruce Clement at tackle.
On the opposite side of the ball, there is a real dogfight for starting position on the defensive line. Keaton Cowley, who returned an interception for a touchdown in the Black and Gold game, Don Greenburg, Corey Montgomery and Ben Roundy are all vying at the defensive end position. Jackson Pace, Colin Jensen and Brady Larsen are going at it to play defensive tackle.
Listed linebackers are Spencer Cook, Mike Blomquist and Brandon Olsen. Cornerbacks are Isaac Bawden and Matt Stucki and starting safeties are Bowie Jeffs and Zeke Atwood.
So how will this team play out? Region 8 is tough. Lehi and North Sanpete were semi-finals last year, Delta is annually playing in November, but then again so is Emery. To be honest, this year’s team could finish last in the region, but if they play as a team they could also win it.
The Spartans are on the road this Friday night at Union High in Roosevelt.
Good Luck Spartans.
