Matheson Salutes Sportsmen

Washington D.C.-Congressman Jim Matheson recently thanked sportsmen for their contributions to conservation and to the economy. Matheson voted for HR 362-“Recognizing the Importance of Sportsmen” which passed the House of Representatives Tuesday evening.
“For generations of Utah families, hunting and fishing is a way of life that goes back to early settlement times. It is an important part of our culture and our heritage,” said Matheson. “What many may not know is how vital sportsmen are to conservation and to the health of rural economies. Sportsmen in Utah have helped increase funding for Utah wildlife by over $60 million and of that, $8 million has gone into habitat enhancement projects benefiting all species of fish and wildlife. Clearly, Utah sportsmen put their money where their mouth is when it comes to protecting critical habitat.”
“Sportsmen support more jobs in this country than Wal-Mart-America’s largest employer. Anglers support more jobs than Exxon-Mobil, General Motors and Ford combined. During 2001, Utah hunting trip-related expenditures alone totaled more than $450 million. I am pleased to join my colleagues in strong bipartisan support of the benefits contributed by sportsmen.”
