Spartans Prepare for Playoffs: Boys at Bear River, Girls at UVSC

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Reporter

The Emery High Spartans finished both the football and volleyball seasons last week with losses to the Delta Rabbits. The girl’s volleyball team traveled to Delta and lost in four games 25-19, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-20. The football team hosted the Rabbits and lost 45-14.
The Rabbits took the early lead in the football game as Emery threw an interception two plays into the game and Delta returned it to the Emery nine yard line. They scored on fourth down from three yards out. The Spartans next possession started at their own 17 yard line and they marched the length of the field to have first and goal at the two yard line before they self destructed.
Bowie Jeffs’ quarterback sneak for 13 yards, Jeffs to Mike Blomquist for 22 yards, Jeffs to Zeke Atwood for 18 yards and Spencer Cook to Matt Stucki for 25 yards were the big plays in the drive. With first and goal, the Spartans then marched backwards with a five yard motion penalty, a 15 yard offensive pass interference penalty, a 10 yard holding penalty and a fumbled punt snap and the Rabbits took over at the Emery 49 yard line. Not only did we not score, it seemed like the wind was taken out of the Emery sails. The Rabbits then scored four times in the second period to put the game away with a 38-0 lead.
The Spartans did outscore Delta in the second half 14-7 as Emery scored on their first and third drives of the half. Cook scored from three yards out after Emery marched down the field 81 yards with the big play being a 39 yard pass from Jeffs to Isaac Bawden. Jeffs 22 yard pass to Blomquist was the Spartans last touchdown.
The Spartans now travel to Bear River High School for the first round of 3-A playoffs this Friday at 4 p.m. The school is located in the town of Garland, which is just north of Tremonton. The address is 1450 South State.
The girls volleyball team finished the season at 2-6 in Region 8 play and will play Morgan at 12:30 p.m. Friday at UVSC. This is a double elimination tournament so the Spartans will also play later in the day. The tournament wraps up on Saturday with the championship game that evening.
