During the November city council meeting, Castle Dale Mayor Neal Peacock welcomed Ferron resident Janet Petersen as an honorary Castle Dale citizen. Petersen received the Mayors award from the Governor’s Commission on the Humanities for her work at the museums in Castle Dale.
Peacock nominated Petersen for the award which was recently given at a banquet held in Salt Lake City by then Lt. Gov. Olene Walker. Among Petersen’s accomplishments are the writing of grants to purchase replacement windows for the Pioneer Museum and her tireless work at the Museum of the San Rafael, both located in Castle Dale.
Petersen said, “You don’t do this kind of work for the award, you do it for what’s in your heart. These museums have been in my heart and I do what I can.” Peacock mentioned that Petersen was raised in Castle Dale and he was happy to welcome her back as a Castle Dale citizen.
Following Petersen’s award, Peacock opened the first of four public hearings that the city was holding that evening. The first was to hear comments concerning the adoption of and ordinance enforcing State of Utah Municipal Code 10-8-38 (2) (a) through (c) providing for mandatory sewer hookup within 300 feet of any property line in the city limits of Castle Dale.
This ordinance will require sewer hookup for any building that would be constructed or existing within 300 feet of the city limits. If there are sewer lines within that 300 feet, property owners will be mandated to hook up to those lines.
Public hearing number two was ordinance 11-13-03A which includes additions and amendments to the Castle Dale City Planning and Development Code concerning minor subdivisions. Kerry Lake, planning and zoning coordinator, explained the wording in the old ordinance and how that wording required clarification. This new wording would make improvements and changes to the existing ordinance.
Hearing number three was the adoption of a Official Zone Map for Castle Dale City. This project has been on the table for some time. Revisions and corrections have been made and this is the final draft.
Salary increases for the mayor and city council was the topic of the final public hearing. Discussion was held concerning the present salaries of the positions and it was noted that the public servants had not received a raise for the past 10 years. After some investigation, it was learned that Castle Dale is among the lowest paid councils in the area.
Mayor Peacock recognized the council as having worked very hard over the years for its fiscal responsibility. All of the public hearing items were approved and accepted by the council.
Following the public hearings, Gwen Peacock informed the council of the youth city council activities. The youth city council held a contest to design new T-shirts. The winner has been named and the logo accepted. Also, the youth city council will be doing the Christmas decorations in the park on Nov. 22. Councilman LaMont Gordon requested the youth city council to help with the town Christmas party again this year. That party is scheduled for Dec.11 at 5 p.m.
City Maintenance Supervisor Tom Maier requested approval by the council for the purchase of a new sander for the city snowplow. Two options were given to the council for their consideration. It was decided by the council to purchase a Holland nine foot sander, with the stipulation that Councilman Dan Whiteleather approve the specs.
Gordon reported that the pool is now closed for the season and work is progressing on the closure and winterization of the building.
Councilman Brad Giles inquired as to the application of the new city logo on city equipment. The council approved this measure. Giles also said that the formula for the calculation of the price of business licenses is forthcoming.
Whiteleather informed the council that a welder is coming to complete the work on the pavilion at the rodeo grounds. He will also be meeting with the rodeo committee to discuss the fees and scheduling for the facility.
The next council meeting for the city of Castle Dale will be held following the City Christmas Party, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m.
