Jewkes Dance Studio presented the Nutcracker on Dec. 10 and 11 in the Emery High Auditorium. The ballet was under the direction of Stacey Jewkes and Shannon Erickson. The production involved more than 100 children and adults. “I really appreciate all of the students, parents and community members who have helped with this production. This was a nonprofit event and we hope to put any proceeds back into the community,” said Jewkes. The Nutcracker is set in Germany and tells the tale of Fritz and Marie Stahlbaum who receive gifts from Herr Drosselmeyer. Marie receives a nutcracker which is broken by her jealous brother. Later that evening the nutrcracker and all of the toys become lifesized. A fight breaks out with the mice and the nutcracker kills the mouse king and the nutcracker is transformed into a prince. The prince and Marie go to the land of sweets and they are led on the path by the snow queen and icicles. After arriving at the kingdom of sweets, Marie and the prince are entertained by many dancers. Drosselmeyer gently carries Marie back to her home as the court waves goodbye.
