Harriet’s World

By HARRIET BISHOP

The other day, I and some friends of mine were discussing how certain events in our lives trigger memories of unhappy events in our lives. We were knee deep in serious discussion when one of my friends, who I promised to remain nameless, suddenly looked up and interrupted the proceedings with a yelp.
She began pointing at my little dog and recoiling. She was about to stand up in the chair she was sitting in, much to our astonishment. I couldn’t see what she was pointing at so she managed to utter the words,”Is your little dog suppose to have that furry thing in her mouth?” I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about as my little dog Sausha began walking into view.
Now you have to understand something. Sausha keeps all of her stuffed animals and toys and treasures at the bottom of our basement stairs. She brings them up one at a time in her mouth at various times. She shares this space with our cat Smokey. When anyone comes she loves to parade them around, showing everyone her treasures. She thinks when anyone comes that they have come to see her.
Now Sausha parades into view with, sure enough, a furry thing in her mouth. By now, my friend, is about to climb up the wall. When I get a look at what Sausha has dug up I say very calmly.” Yes, that’s her little stuffed ferret.”
Now my friend gets this relieved look on her face and begins to climb down out of the chair and she says,”Oh, thank goodness, I thought it was Binkie all over again.”
Of course now we all want an explanation and here is what she told us: It seems some years ago my friend’s family had a hampster. It’s name was, you got it, Binkie. The family went away for a vacation and when they arrived home they found that Binkie had gotten out and the cat had made quick work of it. It seems all that was left of poor Binkie was some skin and some fur.
When my friend saw my little dog with the stuffed ferret in her mouth she was seeing Binkie’s demise all over again . Of course when she realized it wasn’t another Binkie in Sausha’s mouth, she laughed and then we all had a good laugh over the whole incident.
Of course in my mind all I could picture was the family looking for this hampster . Then realizing that the little piece of fur, looking somewhat like a tail and sitting in front of the door, WAS Binkie. You have to admit that is funny.
My friend said it was much more traumatic for the children than it was for her and her husband. After the other day I can’t help but wonder.
Well, that is my world, until next time remember: we all have bad memories, but it’s important to remember them with a good sense of humor.
