Evan F. Johnson
“Killer”
CASTLE DALE-Evan F. “Killer” Johnson, age 42, passed away at home peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Feb. 8, 2004. He was born Feb. 16, 1961 in Price to Allen and Glenda Abel Johnson. Married Nance Wanders, Feb. 22, 1986 in Castle Dale.
Evan was a loving husband, father, son and brother who enjoyed spending time wtih his family and friends. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and playing as much golf as he could. Evan graduated from Carbon High in 1979 and began working for UDOT. After working for UDOT for two years, Evan went to work mining coal for the past 22 years.
He is survived by his wife, Nance Johnson; daughter Kristie; son, Kyle, all of Castle Dale; mom, Gertrude Johnson, Kenilworth; identical twin brother, Kevin Johnson, Long Beach, Calif.; brothers, Mike (Valerie) Johnson, David (Diana) Johnson, both of Price; George (Diane) Richards, West Jordan; sister, Peggy (Ross) Christensen, Salem. Preceded in death by his parents Allen and Glenda Johnson; and sister, Rebecca DeRose.
Funeral service will be held Thurs. Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Castle Dale Cemetery.
Junia “June” Medina
Junia “June” Medina, age 66, passed away Feb. 4 of a heart attack, during her dialysis treatment at Castleview Hospital.
She was born Dec. 28, 1937 in Gallina, N.M. to Jose and Francisquita Trujillo Maestaz.
June grew up in Dragerton, Utah, and met the love of her life, Juan Medina, while picking cherries in Utah Valley. June and Juan Medina would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary on Sept. 11 of this year.
The Medinas’ settled into Salt Lake City in 1960 to provide the American dream for their children. June lived for her family, who treasured her as their matriarch. She was the light who led the whole family. Everyone went to her for love and advice. June and Juan were an inseparable team; she was his left hand, and he was her right hand.
Survived by her husband, Juan Medina, of Price; sister, Naomi Martinez, Antonio, Colo.; brothers, Manuel Maestaz, Magna; Eloy Maestaz, East Carbon; seven children, Tom (Leticia), Veronica (Ignacio), Alfred, John (Sophia), Michele, Greg, and Denise; eight grandchildren; Raquel, Leti, Jessica, Alicia, Tori, Karley, Alexandria, and Juan Antonio. They will all miss her greatly. Preceded in death by parents, and an infant brother.
Funeral service was held Monday, Feb. 9, 11 a.m., Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main St. in Price. Internment, Cliffview Cemetery.
Mary H. Pinarelli
“Nana”
SPRING GLEN-Our beloved mother, nana, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mary Helen Aragone Pinarelli, age 87, passed away Feb. 4, 2004 in Sandy, with her kids by her side. She was born Dec. 1, 1916 in Shinnston, W.V. to Tony and Maria Fratto Aragone. Her parents later moved to Columbia, where she was raised.
On June 8, 1940, she married Samuel J. Pinarelli in Price and she will be reunited with her husband who preceded in death on April 21, 1966. She also reunites with her sisters, brothers, parents and many dear friends.
Mary was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church. She served as president of the St. Anthony Altar Society, BPW, and the Merry-Mix Ups. Mom was honored as Woman of the Year for St. Anthony’s in 1985 and as Woman of the Year for the BPW in 1997, She was a member of the Business Professional Women for 25 years. Member of Stella D’America Lodge #77, Slovenian Home of Spring Glen and the Helper American Legion Auxiliary.
Mom worked most of her life for Notre Dame School Lunch Program, Carbon Country Club, Price Elk’s Lodge and Red Balloon.
Survived by her daughter, DeAnna (Wayne) Sittre, St. George; son, Ron (Eva) Pinarelli, South Jordan; grandchildren, Mike (Cindy) Smith, Nicolle Pinarelli; two great-grandchildren; and a large extended family of relatives and dear friends.
Mary will be missed by all that knew her.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Mark Rada and the entire staff at Health South for their loving care given to our mother.

Ed Shaff
EAST CARBON-Edward Eugene Shaff, age 70, passed away Feb. 5, 2004 at his home. Born Oct. 19, 1924 in Grand Junction, Colo. to William A. and Mable Stacy Shaff. Married Sherry Fern Preston, March 31, 1975 in Elko, Nev.
Ed was a 60 year member of the United Mine Workers of America, Kaiser Steel Local #9958. He was very proud of his country and served honorably in the US Army during Korea. Ed loved camping, fishing and his special trips to Mesquite. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends,

Terry Mervin Johnson
EMERY-Terry Mervin Johnson, age 75, passed away Feb. 5, 2004 in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born Oct. 18, 1928 in Emery to Mervin Randolf and Velma Jane Maxfield Johnson. He married Gwen Watson, Jan. 23, 1948 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple.
He served in the US Navy during WWII. Terry will always be remembered as being an honest, industrious man of many talents, having worked with heavy equipment as a mechanic and operator. He also worked in the coal and uranium mines, a welder, a lumberman and wood worker. He loved horses, farming, Nine Mile, Caterpillar equipment, square dancing, “buggin” children and above all else, his family. He was also a “teacher of life,” sharing what he had learned with others. He was a retired member of Operating Engineers.
Terry is survived by his wife Gwen of Emery and his children: Kelly Ray Johnson, David Lee and Lynn Johnson, Ralph Terry and Julie Johnson; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Also survived by brother Dilworth Randolf Johnson and sister Dora Jane Peterson.
Funeral services wil be held Wed. Feb. 11, 2004 at noon in the Emery LDS Chapel. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and from 10:30 -11:45 a.m. prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Emery Cemetery.
Yoshie DeCaro
WELLINGTON-Yoshie Kogachi DiCaro, age 57, passed away suddenly Feb. 7, 2004 at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake. Born June 10, 1946 in Kametsu, Tokunoshima, Kagoshima Ken, Japan to Hukuyoshi and Taru Shirai Kogachi. Married Benjamin DiCaro, Nov. 14, 1974 in Naha, Okinawa, Japan; later divorced.
Yoshie was a longtime resident of Wellington where she owned and operated Yoshie’s Alterations. She was an excellent seamstress and her doors were open to everyone since 1981. She had a great love for music, especially for the organ and guitar. She also enjoyed cooking. Yoshie was very proud to have earned her diploma from Carbon High School in June of 2002 and she was presently attending the College of Eastern Utah. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends and many patrons.
Survived by her daughters, Maria (Bru) Baker, West Valley City; Sophia DiCaro, Salt Lake City; grandson, Raiden Baker; three brothers, Kiyoshi, Hiroshi, Shigeshi; sisters, Shigeko and Tatsuko. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter, Kimiko Baker and brother, Hukuhiro.

Margie Ruth Wright
Margie Ruth Wright, 67, died on Jan. 24, 2004 in Mesa, Ariz. following a courageous battle with cancer.
Margie was born on May 29, 1936, in Clawson, to Andrew Oren and Bessie Norwood Wright. Although her life’s experiences took her to many different locations, she never forgot her roots and enjoyed saying that she was born and raised in Emery County. She returned to Emery County with her family from 1969-1972. Member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
She is survived by her five children: Wendy (Eric) Woodhouse, Valencia, Calif.; LaMar Knudsen, Charleston, South Carolina; Duane (Shelley) Knudsen, Mesa, Ariz.; Ruth Ann (Carlos) Vasquez, Mesa, Ariz.; Janet (Shane) Rowe, Mesa, Ariz. Survived by her 16 grandchildren: Brandon, Andrew, Aaron, Lani, Niki, Xan, Jacob, Michelle, Brian, Elizabeth, Joseph, Nathan, Nicholas, Brittany, Megan and Colton. Also survived by one great-granddaughter with a great-grandson on the way. Margie’s other survivors include three brothers and two sisters: Keith (Helen) Wright, Clawson; Lynn (Jean) Wright, St. George; Mavis Whittle, Kearns; Doug Wright, Clawson; and Joan (Jeremy) Borrett, Las Cruces, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Lyle and Ray; and a sister, Ramona.
Over the last 15 years, Margie worked in the medical records field. Her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her immediate and extended family members and all those who knew her.
A celebration of Margie’s life took place on Feb. 7 at the Ferron “church on the hill.” A private interment for family members followed at the Ferron City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, her family suggests that donations be made to Banner Hospice, 1325 North Fiesta Blvd., Suite 1, Gilbert, Ariz. 85233.
Delta Fennell
EAST CARBON-Delta Schrum Bass Fennell, age 86, passed away Feb. 2, 2004 in East Carbon. Born on July 23, 1917 in Omaha, Ark., to John and Rosa Garver Schrum. Married Henry Bass in 1933 and he later passed away in 1939. Married Charles W. Fennell Dec. 19, 1945 in Denver, Colo. He died Dec. 4, 1972.
Lifelong member of the Pentecostal Church. Resident of East Carbon since 1947. Delta enjoyed music, roses and her greatest love was her grandchildren.
Survived by sons, Edward Lee Bass, Red Bluff, Calif.; Bob (Virginia) Bass, East Carbon; sister, Lee Eaton. Ft. Worth, Texas; brothers, Ben Schrum, Grand Junction, Colo.; Sherman Schrum, Idaho; six loving grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents; twin sister, Della; sister, Clarasie; brother, Fred; and granddaughter, Vivian Tippit.
Graveside service was held Fri. Feb. 6 in the Orchard Mesa Cemetery in Grand Junction, Colo. under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Margaret Dorothy Nelson
Dorothy Nelson, age 63, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family Feb. 5, at her home in Green River. She was born Jan. 10, 1941 in Russell, Manitoba, Canada, to George and Florence Pearl Porter Robb. She married Bruce Earl Nelson Dec. 27, 1962, in the Cardston, Alberta, LDS Temple.
As an active member of the LDS Church, she served in numerous callings. She graduated from SUU with a degree in Elementary Education and taught for a short time in Green River, quitting only to raise her 8 children, to whom she dedicated her life. She encouraged and supported them in all they did, from ball games to queen pageants and educational pursuits. She found her professional passion serving others as an EMT for 18 years, achieving a high degree of skill. She was recognized on a state and national level for her volunteerism and dedication to the community. She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched.
Dorothy is survived by her husband Bruce of Green River and children: Robert and Kaye Nelson of Green River, Pearline and Peter Ninow of West Valley, Craig and Heidi Nelson of Calif., Warren and Kordine Nelson of Green River, Dorolie and Zane Peters of Wendover, NV, Saralyn Nelson of Denver, Tyresha Nelson of Green River, and Arianne and Douglass Wright of Grand Junction, and 17 grandchildren. Also survived by brother Don Robb and sister Cathy Floyd. Preceded in death by one grandchild R. J. Nelson, both parents.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 12 noon in the Green River LDS Chapel where friends may call from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Elgin Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Eleanor Yakovich
PRICE-Eleanor Yakovich, age 81, passed away Feb. 1, 2004 at her home in Price.
Eleanor was born July 3, 1922 in Walsenburg, Colo. to John Butkovich and Frances Ferkovich. She was very proud of her Croatian heritage.
During the 1950s and 60s, Eleanor managed the Carbon Country Club in Price and the Dinaland Country Club in Vernal. Following a move to Roosevelt, she was a buyer for the JC Penney store in Roosevelt.
Upon her retirement,Eleanor returned to Price to begin a new career, that of helping to provide a home and care for her great-grandsons, David and Pete Yakovich.
She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother as well as agreat beauty and wonderful cook.
Eleanor is survived by former husband, David Yakovich, Gusher; daughter, Darlene (Tom) Sessions, Upland, Calif.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sisters, Alma Irene Wilcox, Salt Lake City; Ann Sudar, Walsenburg, Colo.; brother Rudy Shubart, Durango, Colo.; sisters-in-law Florence Butkovich and Myrtle Shubert; and nieces and nephews each of whom she was very fond and proud of. Preceded in death by parents; and son, David G. Yakovich Jr.
Graveside service was held Feb. 4 at Mountain View Cemetery in Helper.
Adeline Leonard Wakefield Starr
1908-2004
“An Elect Lady”
Adeline Leonard Wakefield Starr, 95, passed away peacefully at home on Feb. 5. Born Aug. 11, 1908, in Huntington, to John H. and Alice Leonard. She was valedictorian at Huntington High School, 1927. Adeline married Perry P. Wakefield Dec. 5, 1933, in the Manti Temple. He died Apr. 24, 1965. She married William Starr May 24, 1969. He died Dec. 21, 1987.
Adeline was County Chairman of the American Cancer Society for 10 years, President of YWMIA, President of Relief Society, teacher, and active member of the LDS Church all her life. She loved traveling, writing, reading, sewing-she sent numerous articles to the Utah State Fair every year since 1921, winning hundreds of ribbons and prizes. Due to her many accomplishments she has been the subject of articles and features in many newspapers and periodicals and has chronicled her own life of 95 years in several volumes.
She is survived by six sons: Gregg (Eldyth), Price; Garth (Kay Lynn), Salt Lake City; Shelton (Sharon), Houston, Texas; Wendell (Lynette), Roswell, NM; Lond (Valene), Huntington; Preston (Becky), Salt Lake City; one daughter, Jerilyn Wakefield, Stansbury Park, one brother, Lund Leonard, Ferron, 22 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her family expresses heartfelt thanks to her many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at the Huntington Stake Center on Main Street. A viewing was held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and 1 hr. prior to services at the church. Burial was in the Huntington City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Taylor Lund Leonard
Lund Leonard, age 89, died peacefully in his sleep at the care center in Ferron, Feb. 7, 2004. Lund was born in Huntington on April 6, 1914, the seventh of eight children of John Hyrum and Alice Rowley Leonard. He married Dorris Williams, July 2, 1937 in the Manti LDS Temple.
He was a lifelong resident of Huntington where he raised his family and contributed to the betterment of his church and community as bishop of the Huntington 2nd Ward and as Mayor of Huntington City and president of the Emery County School Board. His most rewarding and satisfying church service was as a temple worker with his loving wife in the Manti LDS Temple, where he also served as a sealer and later as First Counselor in the Temple presidency. Lund loved to sing and sang with the Huntington Glee Club for most of his life. He valued the association and feelings of brotherhood in that distinguished organization.
He leaves his children, Therald (Peggy Ann) Leonard of Auburn, Wash.; Larry (Karen) Leonard of Price; Rita (Angelo) Perri of Spring Glen; Keith (Jill) Leonard of Arlington, Wash.; and Carol Ann (Steven) Stream of Huntington; 25 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Dorris Williams Leonard, a grandson, Stephen Lund Leonard, and all his brothers and sisters. Ironically, his last surviving sister, Adeline Wakefield Starr, preceded him in death by just 36 hours.
Funeral services will be held in the Huntington Stake Center on Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in the Huntington Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Taylor Lund Leonard
CASTLE DALE-Robert Lynn Gordon, age 63, passed away Jan. 27, 2004 at his home. He was born March 20, 1940 in Salt Lake City to Clarence LaDean and Irene Dixon Gordon. Longtime resident of Emery and Carbon counties.
Robert was an excellent fly fisherman who loved fishing the Huntington River and the big rivers of Oregon.
Survived by his children, Vince (Brooke) Gordon, Draper; Jennifer Gordon, Portland, Ore.; Angel (Martin) Ayala, Chicago, Ill.; Tina (Bill) Mason, Auburn, Ind.; Michael Ayala, Portland, Ore.; sister, Joyce (Harmon) Winder, Pleasant Grove; aunt, Don (Marlene) Jensen, Castle Dale; best friend Perry Murphy, Castle Dale; sister-in-law Myra Freeman, Castle Dale; also survived by six grandchildren and one more on the way, Megan Angela Gordon. Preceded in death by brother, Leonard Gordon and infant sister.

Robert Lynn Gordon
CASTLE DALE-Robert Lynn Gordon, age 63, passed away Jan. 27, 2004 at his home. He was born March 20, 1940 in Salt Lake City to Clarence LaDean and Irene Dixon Gordon. Longtime resident of Emery and Carbon counties.

Edith Dawn Bemis
Edith Dawn Cummings Bemis of Orangeville, passed away Feb. 6, 2004. Born Sept. 29, 1930, in Salt Lake City to William Chester and Aileen Beatrice Linton Cummings. She was the oldest of four girls: Doris Larson, Bonnie Thomas and Marge Ball. She has two sons: Lory and John Bemis, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was an active, endowed member of the LDS Church. She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by those whose lives she touched.
Graveside services were held Feb. 9 in the Orangeville City Cemetery under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
June R. Maxwell
HUNTINGTON-June R. Maxwell, born June 24, 1937, died Feb. 6, 2004 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. June worked at the Senior Citizen Center in Huntington. She loved painting and quilting.
She is survived by one sister, Luana Petta (Robert), Zion, Ill.; nephew, Moy Bejare (Sandy), Griswold, Iowa; a niece Joyce Kutkas (Gary), Price; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Virginia DeBejar, five brothers and two sisters. There will be no services.
Catherine Margaret Lowe Rhinehart
Catherine Margaret Lowe Rhinehart, 92, of Fort Collins, Colo., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 4, at a local nursing home.
She was born April 4, 1911, in Trinidad, Colo. to Alexander Mill and Willie Winona Ramey Lowe.
Married Arvil Lee Rhinehart, Sept. 12, 1929 in Trinidad Colo. He died Nov. 30, 1997.
Catherine was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Naomi Chapter #13 of Price. She was an accomplished seamstress, homemaker, and enjoyed collecting hummingbirds.
Survivors include her daughter, Billie Jean (Arnold John) Ackerman, Fort Collins; granddaughter, Brenda Rhodes, Fort Collins; grandson, Paul Ackerman, Vista Calif.; great-grandson, Kevin Rhodes, Fort Collins.
Preceded in death by her husband, Arvil, and brother, William Lowe.
