Cougars Capture Tournament Championship

It’s all hands on deck as the players try to get a hold on the ball.

The Canyon View Cougars met the San Rafael Bulldogs in the Castle Country Athletic Association basketball tournament on Feb. 19 at Mont Harmon. The Bulldogs came out shooting and scored eight unanswered points and played some tough defense. The cold shooting of the Cougars also gave the Bulldogs a fast start. Canyon View seemed to come alive and they only trailed by three at the end of the first quarter 10-13.
The second quarter saw some tough defensive play on both sides of the ball. The Cougars battled back and Ryan Stream hit a three pointer to end the half with the Cougars trailing by two. The end of the third quarter saw the Cougars ahead by one, 37-36. Jacob Begay from San Rafael hit a three pointer to end the third quarter. The fourth quarter was all Canyon View as David Acosta came alive on both ends of the court. Dempsey Jeffs for San Rafael added two points to their total and Acosta answered with a three for Canyon View. Ryan Stream for Canyon View connected on a three and brought the Cougars to 43-39, San Rafael.
With 6:29 left to go in the fourth quarter, Acosta puts in a two point basket to bring the tally to CVJH-45-39, SRJH. Begay comes alive on the defensive end for San Rafael and blocks a couple of Canyon View shots. Dallen Lyons is fouled and adds one point to the CVJH score. With 3:13 left to play CVJH 48-SRJH 39. The teams trade foul shots with Acosta making one for CVJH and Jeffs putting one in for SRJH. Skyler Jensen for CVJH goes to the foul line and puts in a basket to bring the score to CVJH, 50-SRJH, 40. Stream excutes a steal for CVJH and SRJH returns the favor as they steal the ball in return. The ball ends up out of bounds off the foot of a player. Jensen is again fouled and goes to the line where he makes one and misses one. On the other end of the floor, Begay is fouled and shoots two, making one and missing one. Canyon View’s Lyons, fouled out on the play and took a seat on the bench. The next trip down the court, Kyler Edgehouse from SRJH also fouls out.
Acosta, CVJH, sinks two quick shots and brings the tally to CVJH, 55-SRJH, 40 with 1:10 to go in the game. Devin Hooley for CVJH is fouled and goes to the line where he puts in both shots. The Bulldogs foul Jensen to stop the clock and he puts in one and misses one. Begay puts in two on the SRJH side. The last 44 seconds of the game was spent with the Bulldogs fouling to try to buy some time, but the Cougars end up with the 62-46 win over the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs received a trophy for being the league champions and the Cougars received the tournament trophy for being tournament champs.
