The Green River Pirates finished their season with two losses at the region 16 tournament held at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale. The Pirates played the Rich Rebels in the opening round. The Pirates entered the tournament, second in their region. The Pirates were unable to stop the Rebels. The Rebels tough defense prevented the Pirates from getting the ball underneath to the big guy Cody Webster. The Rebels led the Pirates 23-38 at the half. The Pirates came close in the second half. Good outside shooting by Lance Richards and Jake Mecham narrowed the Rebel lead. But, it was not to be as the Rebels won the game 60-72.
On the second day of the tourney the Pirates played Altamont and lost by a score of 48-59. Scoring for the Pirates: Lance Richards, 18, Jared Johnson, 3, Cody Webster, 8, Jake Mecham, 19. This loss sent the Pirates home for the season and dashed hopes of playing in the state tournament.
Green River Pirates players are: Garion Ford, Lance Richards, Jared Johnson, Jerome Burns, Jacob Dunwoody, Cody Webster, Jake Mecham, Hyrum Mitchell, Brent Johnson. Kaden Robertson, Parker Hatt and Kaleb Fail.
The Pirates will lose four players to graduation including Ford, Richards, J. Johnson and Burns, but will be returning the big men, Webster and Mecham. Mitchell also a starter on this year’s team is only a sophomore and will contribute experience to the team.
