Ferron City, in preparation for their new fire station, awarded the bid for construction to Stilson Construction. In a bid opening meeting held on March 9, the bids were opened for the second round, and Stilson Construction was the lowest bid. Although the bid was still over the amount of grant money the city has for the construction of the fire station, the council felt that it would be best to award the bid with the stipulation that negotiation will take place to reduce the cost of the building to bring it in line with the funding available.
Along with awarding the bid for the construction, the council adopted a resolution authorizing the municipal building authority of Ferron to conduct the business and take all actions necessary to oversee the construction of the fire station.
The council also approved a business license to Jeff Walkenhorst, to open Desert Frog ATV Adventures. This business will promote tourism in the San Rafael Swell by advertising and attracting out of the area ATV enthusiasts. Walkenhorst said they will be a guide service for this enterprise.
The Emery County Care and Rehabilitation Center explained to the council that their plans are to do the craft and bake sale again during the Peach Days celebration. The proceeds will be used for the Enabling Garden at ECCRC. They are still in need of trees and raised seed beds. They are also in need of a big screen TV for the residents.
Councilman Joe Trenery informed the council of the proposed ordinance change to allow livestock in the city limits. This proposal has been in the investigative stage for eight months. He has recently heard from the Utah State University people who have been working on the recommended amount of property necessary to support different animals.
After reviewing the land requirements, the council approved to draft this proposal and post it before the required public hearing is held. A public hearing must be held for the residents of Ferron to give their input on any ordinance change. Mayor Larsen reiterated that this is only a proposal and that a public hearing will be held to gather residents feelings concerning this proposed change.
Councilperson Melinda MECCAriello informed the council that she has been looking into some safety concerns surrounding the cemetery. There has been some concern about the width of the road. After extensive research of the recommendations and measuring the existing roadway, she recommended that the council only look into the part of the ordinance concerning snow removal. It is her feeling that the existing ordinance is sufficient.
The city adopted a uniform fee and usage schedule for use of the city’s properties. Each resident who wished to schedule the use of a building or property must go to city hall and make the arrangements. Under this new fee schedule, every property is outlined and rated. With regard to the arena at the fairgrounds, some revision may be done to the schedule after the power rates are figured.
Jo Sansevero gave the Arapeen ATV Jamboree update. She stated that there are more reservations now than the number of people who came to the jamboree last year. With nearly seven months before the jamboree is to be held, hopes are that it will be well attended. Most of the bookings that have come are from out of state people who have heard about last year’s jamboree. The jamboree planning committee is now going to approach Carbon County for some help.
Councilman Randy Fox announced that Commissioner Gary Kofford had asked him to sit on the Emery County Fair board.
Councilperson MECCAriello announced that the Easter Egg Hunt will be held April 6 at 4:30 p.m. at Mayor’s Park.
