Harriet’s World

By HARRIET BISHOP

Boy this weather is something isn’t it? Spring has always been my favorite time of year. You know the little bulbs sticking their heads through the melting snow and the warm, sunny days and all.
Well, I don’t know about you, but this year I have begun to wonder if I liked Spring at all! It seems all I have done all this Spring is turn the heat up or turn the heat off. That is, when I can remember to turn the heat off. Half the time I’m wondering in the afternoon why it is getting so hot in the house then I stop and ask myself, “Did I turn that heat off this morning or not?” Ninety percent of the time I haven’t.
Then of course we have the window experience. (Did I turn the furnance off?) Do I throw the windows open and let the breeze blow through or do I keep them closed? When I throw them open it works for about half an hour and then the wind comes up and starts blowing a gale through the house and I have to close them or secure all the papers down in the house. Do I breath fresh air or do I freeze to death? Is the wind going to be hot or cold?
I swear there is a little wind guy out there with a walkie talkie and as soon as he sees that I have opened the windows, he gets busy on his phone and tells the powers that be that Harriet Bishop has her windows open. Then he says something like,”give her a blast for an hour or two and then stop blowing. Don’t blow again until she opens the windows again.”
If that isn’t enough to keep a person on their toes, the weather man gets involved to say, “For the next two days it will be unseasonably hot. For the next two or three days it will hit 100 degrees. So turn on your air conditioners people.” Now I have the air conditioner in the mix. So I get my air conditioner up and running only to hear the weatherman say, “The heat is coming, it’s coming.”
Well DUH! I could have predicted that! Now I have the added dilemma of, do I shut the windows and turn on the air conditoner or do I wait until the house gets so hot that it will take all night to cool if off?
Now I wake up in the morning and I ask myself, do I turn off? turn on or throw open? It is a great way to get your exercise. Then of course I have the added decision of what to wear. Do I wear a sweater or take a sweater? Do I put on my summer clothes or leave on my winter ones. For sure as I put on those cool summer pants I risk freezing to death when I come home from wherever I have been. If it is cold in the morning, then I wish to heaven I had put on my summer pants for the afternoon because I am about to roast to death.
A person just cannot win in the Spring. Now you know why I am not thrilled with Spring this year. It has been a roller coaster ride. It is certainly no time for me to count on making wise decisions. If you’re smart, you will save them for later in the coming months when it is hotter than the hubs of you know what! Of course that is another story.
Well, that is my world.
Until next time remember those infamous words of Mark Twain, “Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living.
“The world owes you nothing.
“It was here first, said Twain.
