Construction work on State Route 10 from Huntington to Poison Springs Bench is nearing completion.
Nielson Construction has been at work on the more than seven mile project since late May of 2003 and final excavation and paving of the project is expected to be complete by the end of June.
The majority of the project was completed last fall and Nielson crews returned to the project in the spring to begin work on an under drain blanket beneath the highway in the area of the Huntington Airport, which was planned for this year. The road work there will be complete in the next week and Nielson asphalt crews will begin the final paving operations.
A final lift of asphalt will be required from Huntington to the Huntington Airport and then the entire length of the project will be chip sealed thereafter.
The Department of Transportation project saw the creation of passing lanes throughout the majority of the project and will help alleviate traffic concerns resulting from the increased flow of coal trucks using the road in recent years.
At the height of the project last summer more than 50 construction workers from Nielson Construction and a number of subcontractors worked together with UDOT to provide a road that is better, safer and more convenient for motorists.

Nielson Construction will also be working all summer on the SR-6 project from Price to Wellington. Nielson’s will also lay 12 miles of asphalt this fall between Woodside and Green River.
Nielsons is currently working on the second phase of the Willow Creek Mine reclamation in Price Canyon. They will also be involved with paving of city streets in Emery County throughout the summer. The Castle Dale intersection that causes
problems by J & D Automotive will also have some realignment work done during the summer which Nielsons will be involved with. A project creating a cell at ECDC in East Carbon will involve Nielson crews throughout the summer. A project is also on the docket for improvements to the riverbottom road in Huntington. Nielsons will also in the next week begin working near Richfield in the development of numerous well site locations for Wolverine Oil.
One big improvement this season is the addition of a second asphalt plant at the Huntington Canyon location. In order to meet the demands for asphalt production the second plant is being added for the production of regular asphalt. The original plant will be used exclusively for the production of superpave. Nielson’s Construction also received the contract to provide asphalt for state maintenance projects for UDOT in this area within a 100 mile radius. Carbon County uses the asphalt facility at Nielsons quite frequently for their county road projects. They pick their loads up at the Huntington Canyon facility.

Nielsons currently employs 184 people and doesn’t have plans for employee growth at the present time, but will remain steady throughout this year as employees move from one job to another.
