Summer School at San Rafael Junior High
Summer school will begin on June 8. A parent or guardian needs to accompany the student on the first day to fill out the registration and pay the fee. It is not mandatory for the students to attend all 10 sessions of summer school. They may complete the work at home or in class, but all work will be due on the last day, which is July 15. Pre-registration will ensure that your student has work ready on the first day. Classes will be held June 8, 10, 15, 17, 22, 24, July 6, 8, 13 and 15. People with Disabilities
Learn more about people with disabilities and their families at two workshops to be given in Emery County presented by the Disability Law Center. In Castle Dale, June 17 at Castle Dale City Hall from 9-11 a.m. In Green River, June 17 at Green River City Hall from 3-5 p.m.
Exploring Utah’s Forests and Wetlands
Project Learning Tree and Project WET are offering a local workshop, Exploring Utah’s Forests and Wetlands. The workshop will be held June 10-11 at Huntington Elementary School from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. It is open to all educators, pre-service educators, parents or local community leaders. Girls Basketball Camp
A girls basketball camp will be held at Emery High School, Old Gym, for 9-12th graders, 8:30-11:30 a.m. For elementary-8th grade 12:30- 2 p.m. There is a fee involved. For more information contact Steven Gordon 687-2373. Learn the fundamentals of basketball, emphasis on handling and shooting, three on three tournament.
CERT Training
Sgt. Martin Wilson will be doing a CERT class, community emergency response training, at the sheriff’s office in Castle Dale on June1, 5-9 p.m., June 3, 5-9 p.m., June 15, 5-9 p.m., and June 17, 5-9 p.m. At the Green River Sheriff’s Office on June 23, 5-9 p.m., June 24, 5-9 p.m., June 29, 5-9 p.m. and July 1, 5-9 p.m. These are 16 hours classes. Power Wheelchairs
The Three Wishes Inc. Program makes available power (electric) wheelchairs to senior citizens (65 years and older) and the permanently disabled at no cost to the recipient, if they qualify. Call toll free at 1-800-817-1871.
No Cost or Low Cost Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings
Southeastern Utah District Health Department offers no cost or low cost breast and cervical cancer screenings. Call 435-381-2252 to schedule an appointment. Screening clinic will be held at the health department, 25 West Main, Castle Dale, on June 11 from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Age and income guidelines apply, these exams may be free for women ages 50-64.

Whitewater Academy for Teens
Canyonlands Field Institute announces openings in its annual Whitewater Academy for Teens. This is a comprehensive introduction for 13-18 year olds to all aspects of river running. Coloring Contest
All fourth graders are invited to enter a poster for the Emery County Fair coloring contest. Color a 20×24 inch poster of Spiderman doing something in Emery County. Win an all day pass to the carnival, a family pass to the Lamb Fry for four and personal time with Spiderman. Spiderman will be at the fair on Aug. 7. Drop posters off at any Emery County Library by July 1. Winner will be chosen from each grade school. Home school is also eligible. Put name, school and phone number on the back of the poster. Old Fashioned Bizarre

Veterans of Foreign Wars

Sustainable Agriculture Research Grants Available
The latest round of funding from the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program will soon be disbursed. Western SARE farmer/rancher grant proposals are due Oct 1, education pre-proposals are due June 7 and professional development program proposals are due Oct. 15. CASA Volunteers Needed
Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. John Wesley Powell Days
June 18-19 are scheduled for the first annual John Wesley Powell Days celebration in Green River. Activites will begin at the museum at 7 p.m. on June 18 and continue through June 19. There will be breakfast, dinner, entertainment, games, plenty of activities for children, movies, a western band and much more.
Miss Heritage Days Scholarship Pageant
All girls and ladies ages 9-24 in Lawrence and Huntington, Miss Heritage Days Scholarship Pageant will be held June 3. There will be a meeting for all participants and their parents on May 20 at 6 p.m. in the Huntington Elementary gym. Miss Cleveland Pageant
All Cleveland girls between the ages of 4-21 are encouraged to participated in this years pageant to be held on June 12. Registration forms are available at the town hall or Country Corner. Joseph Venus Art Exhibit
Utah artist, Joseph Venus’ art will be on exhibit at the College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Art Museum, 155 East Main in Price, during the months of June, July and August. On June 4 at the Art Gallery, a reception will be held to meet the artist from 7-9 p.m.

John Wesley Powell Museum Art Show
Joseph Venus is spearheading an art show to be held at the John Wesley Powell River History Museum in Green River during the month of June. Some of the artworks will be available for purchase. Anyone can participate by bringing artwork to the museum May 23-25. The theme for the show will be Canyon River Runners. Awards will be given. Hunter Safety Class

Relay for Life Memory Wall

Emery History Book
Emery Town is republishing the original Emery History Book. This book is being reproduced exactly as it was with no changes. Advance orders are being taken for books at Emery Town Hall. The books will be ready for sale on Memorial Day and at that time the price will be higher. All proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Emery historical “Old Church” fund.
