The bomb squad from Utah County displays their automated equipment used to defuse explosives.

The Local Emergency Preparedness Committee hosted an emergency preparedness fair at the Spartan Center at Emery High School on Oct. 8. This fair presented an abundance of valuable information for families to become prepared in the event of an emergency or disaster.
Many booths were set up to educate visitors to the dangers that are present in every day life and how to avoid becoming a victim. Other booths provided information and products to help people survive an unexpected tragedy.
In the parking lot of the Spartan Center, Utah County’s HazMat trailer presented a demonstration concerning explosives. Their robots, which are used in retrieving explosive materials, were on display and the officers answered all questions and provided educational materials to help educate parents and children about how to avoid being hurt by explosives.
Castle Dale fire fighter Jerimy West was also set up in the parking lot in one of Castle Dale’s fire trucks. He displayed the equipment a fire fighter uses for fighting fires. The young people were allowed to hold and try on all the equipment to get an idea of what the job of fire fighter would entail.
Sgt. Martin Wilson and Deputy Shaun Bell were also on hand with a demonstration of the CERT (certified emergency response team) and their equipment.
Booths inside the Spartan Center were presented by: Emery County School District, Utah Power, Emery Telcom, Emery Medical Center, Emery County Chamber of Commerce, Hometown Market, ALCO, Boy Scouts, the Red Cross, Emery Animal Health, Questar, Alison’s Pantry, Boyd’s Pharmacy, Magnuson Lumber, Flashlights, Shadow Mtn. Water, and the Southeastern Utah Health Department.
Marilyn Hoffman, The Earthquake Lady, had a booth set up and gave a presentation. She explained to everyone present what is expected to happen during an earthquake and how families and business can become prepared. Utah is situated on a fault line and earthquakes are a matter of when not if.
