Well, it is Halloween time again. Time to get together that stash of candy for all those darling trick or treaters.
I’ve got my candy ready. I have to prepare for about 200 trick or treaters where I live. That can really put a bite in the old budget if you are not careful. I don’t know about you, but I like this holiday.
I love watching all the kids come around all dressed up and especially the little teeny, tiny ones. Dressed like little bears and tigers and mice. Holding on to their brother or sister’s hand while they carefully climb my steps and brave my little dog to get their candy. I’m a sucker when I see that.
They hold up their little bag and look at you with all the wonder and trust in the world in their little eyes. They are not exactly sure what is going on but they are smack dab in the middle of all of it.
It just melts my heart. It is all I can do not to hand them the whole bowl of candy.
I love talking to the kids and telling them what I think of their costumes and such. I comment on someone I think might have on great makeup or someone who looks especially pretty. I might comment on an especially unusual costume. Just what ever happens to hit me at the time. They love it.
Often times I hear them go back out to their mom or dad and tell them that I liked their costume. I think it pleases the kids when you notice.
Sometimes it is a costume that I know they made up at home. You know not store bought. A lot of cleaver parents out there.
We are lucky here in Orangeville. Our children trick or treat in the day. Starting right after school and by 6:30 p.m. its all over and done with. My light goes out and the door does not open again for anyone. They all head over to the school carnival for the evening. I think it is great.
My hat is off to the people who coordinate this event. It is just wonderful. Our children are not out at night on the roads where it isn’t safe.
Some of my friends don’t like Halloween because they eat too much candy! They say they can’t keep a stash before this night because they eat it. Well duh!
I have a solution to that problem. I do not buy candy that I will eat. I buy candy that I don’t like. I’m a chocolate eater. So I do not buy chocolate candy to hand out. That way I don’t have to worry.
There is plenty of wrapped stuff out there that is not chocolate covered. When the day rolls around I am not scrambling for candy. I go to my stash. Dump it all in a big bowl and I am good to go.
When the candy runs out I quit. It is that simple.
Well, that is my world, my universe. Until next time remember those infamous words of Woody Allen. “A good thing about being poor is that when you are 70 years old your children will not have you declared legally insane in order to gain control of your estate.”
