Alexis Swasey stays with her opponent in the opening game for the Spartans.

The Emery High Lady Spartans got the 2004-05 basketball season started with a bang as they hosted the North Sevier Wolves of Salina and sent them home with three losses. The varsity won 52-41, the JV’s won 55-36 and the sophomore team eked out a win 41-40.
Head Coach Steve Gordon attended his first ever girl’s basketball game and came home a winner in his debut. After his assistants each won their games, the pressure was on him to win and his players did not let him down.
Three Spartans scored in double figures to pace the Emery attack. Alexis Swasey led the way with 13 points followed by Camille Fehlberg with 12 points and Natalee Hanson with10 points.
Also contributing to the scoring was Shala Pitchforth with seven points, Callie Seeley with six points and Ashley Hansen and Tahna Merrell with two points each.
North Sevier led after the first quarter as they hit three 3-pointers from the left corner to come away ahead at 9-8. In the second quarter, the Spartans went on a 10-0 run when Fehlberg entered the game. The Spartans led at the half 26-20. Emery outscored the Wolves 10-6 in the third quarter and 16-15 in the fourth quarter to open the season with a win.
Coach Gordon had this to say after the game, “We had a good overall effort tonight. I liked our intensity on defense, they got after it tonight. We do have to learn to break a press though, as we were rattled tonight.”
The Emery JV’s had four players score. Meagan Pearson led the way with 21 points as she ran the floor well and often had good results inside. Fehlberg had 15 points including a pair of 3’s as she directed the offense with numerous assists. Rachel Rasmussen had 10 points as the sophomore played really well on defense. Callie Seeley also added nine points. The JV’s led 12-1 after the first quarter and never looked back.
The Emery sophomores won a squeaker due to missing 14 of 23 free throw attempts. Scoring for the sophomores were Shalae Cox with 12 points, Rasmussen with 10 points, Pearson with six points, Maegan Luke and Malorie Quick with four points each and Haylie Hansen and Tawn Jewkes with two points each.
The Lady Spartans are on the road tonight at Union High School and return home Dec. 3 and 4 against Dixie High and Judge Memorial High. Game time on Saturday is posted starting at 10:30 am with the sophomore game and the others to follow.
