The Green River Pirate boy’s basketball team won their seventh game of the season and third straight region win as they defeated Whitehorse 79-51 on Jan. 28. They lead the region with a 3-0 record.
Whitehorse won the opening quarter 16-14 before the Pirates took control in the second quarter on both ends of the court as they scored 19 points while holding their opponent to only 5 points.
The Pirate domination continued in the second half as they outscored Whitehorse 19-14 in the third period and 27-16 in the final period.
Jake Mecham led all scorers with 33 points and got good help from Cody Webster with 17 points.
Seven other Pirates scored in the game led by Kaden Robertson with 7 points, Nic Brady with 6 points, Brent Johnson, Hyrum Mitchell and Parker Hatt with 4 points each and Jace Vetere and Kaleb Fail with 2 points each.
On the season, Mecham is the leading scorer for the team with a 17.50 average while Webster also averages in double figures with 14.50 points a game.
In basketball action on Friday, the Pirates defeated Navajo Mountain by a score of 90-40. The Pirates will travel to play Whitehorse on Feb. 10. On Feb. 11 Monticello will play in Green River and the regular season will end with Monument Valley in Green River on Feb. 17. The boys basketball team will play in the region tournament on Feb. 24-26 at the Spartan Center in Castle Dale. The state tournament will be March 2-5 in Cedar City.
